I've used these from Torchy (Samsung 30Q flat-top, unprotected) in my BLF A6 for a couple of years with no dramas (but a lot of light).

I have the Nitecore charger and have been using old laptop batteries without a problem but my Dad wants a simple, safe option and I'd like a longer runtime than I currently have.

Problem is my username has an "&" in it, which used to work ok, but since a code update to the forum several years ago, it now confuses the quote system. If quoting me, you'd need to replace the & with "and" or similar, and the quote will work

Also, with regard to the "fire" comment, this I recall clearly from quite some time ago on one of the torch forums - quite a few years ago. It may absolutely be just rubbish, but I did have a few Utrafire batteries at the time, and there were several brands with very similar names available from Dealextreme (dx.com) such as Ultrafire, Trustfire, Singfire, Marsfire so on the basis of erring on the side of safety, particularly as the site concerned were supplying very basic chargers with some of these batteries (not recommended, hence I got the Pila charger) I stopped using them.

What’s the X9R like, comparable to a Lenser X21R?

Did a bit of a torch audit the other day, mainly to check the batteries.

Aside from me being sad, I have a bit of a problem....lol

Missing of the picture are 2 x LED Lenser K2L key ring torches.

Can't comment on the comparison, as I'm not familiar with the Lenser - but the X9R is definitely a floody/walking torch - 'wall of light' affair.

Just looked it up.

It's SIX. HUNDRED. fkING. POUNDS.

You have to have utterly and entirely taken leave of your senses to pay that for a torch.

Best you don't go on Candlepower forums, custom lights make that look cheap!

Having bought an L6 (approx £50) I find it hard to believe anyone would ever need anything better.

The L6 is brilliant all rounder. Simon seems to have carved out his niche with the Convoy brand with rock solid lights that own that VFM segment of the market. But believe it or not, plenty of people need better.

BUT - better is meaningless in this context.
I was crawling behind a PC with a torch in my mouth - my £10 BLF-348 was way better for that purpose than my L6. I went looking for something small in the garden this evening - my Q8 was better for that (much floodier.) Went for a run last night - Nitecore HC30 far better than a bulky L6. And there's no way you'd fit the L6 on my keyring - my Jetbeam Jet II Pro is a better light. All of the above are cheaper than the L6. But 'better.'

And herein lies the issue - there's always some specific job that a different torch would do much more effectively than what you already have. It's N+1.

I still think everyone reading this should own an L6. And a BLF Q8. But if I could afford a £600 torch, I'd buy it. Just like I'd buy a £100k car if I could afford it - everything is relative.

Have a look at some of the Surefire and Streamlight high end weapon lights for rifles. They are not even that bright but there are loads over £500. Just built to take a lot of vibration and heat. I just bought a budget one that's in transit and was £150. Only in the high hundreds of lumens and you could probably buy something with similar output for £20.

It's not a torch - it's the flagship product of a company I massively rate, who engineer their products beautifully, which are also technologically at the leading edge (e.g. latest Cree LEDs used). They are marvels of portable light-production, especially where you consider efficiency & runtimes. To get this kind of output handheld, even 5 years ago or so, you'd have to have spent £5k or something on a Polarion HID torch (which were rubbish, cos delicate). These things are stupendous & beyond belief - as I think LED as a technology basically is.

What 'use' is it? Well for me I will happily get lost in a forest at dusk as a thing to do - nightfall & total darkness adds quite the atmosphere, too. Having a torch which will either last all night if needed, or 'light up into day' - is the perfect tool for this kind of escapade. I've even met ghost-hunters (here are the required number of inverted commas: ' ' ' ') who fully appreciate the device & its superlative capabilities.

Sure, there are lights out there with more power/output - but I'm more interested in this segment, where you're paying for the pinnacle of technology & fabulous execution & attention to practical details. Below this, you get the same (or greater) specs - but not the same quality of execution/finesse - above it (price-wise) I think you're paying for a name or something decidedly intangible (e.g. 'custom' lights).

Another little package from China arrived today.

These "proper" torches do feel very well made when compared to the generic Ebay specials I've had in the past.
