Not interested in upgrading from my 1 until I thought fk it and went to Apple in Brighton just for the hell of it mid afternoon.
5 minutes later a new 64gb wifi was in my grubby little hands which is light years ahead of my iPad 1.
The display is brilliant and the speed of processor is really, really quick.
To be honest, bought for the sake of it but I'm happy that it's as new as technology currently allows me to buy.

Put my iPad 2 next to my lads iPad 3 and it was unanimously agreed that the desktop and internet looked exactly the same.
Then we asked my mrs to say which was the clearer display and she couldn't choose between them.
Must be on HD video that the difference is apparent because at the moment I can't see any advantage at all...they even look all but identical.

How come its not referred to as ipad3 on websites - is this a stop gap 'filler' product like the iphone 4s?
No... I presume they will simply use the name iPad, a bit like MacBook pro is used for multiple versions over time. It will all get a bit silly otherwise, I reckon. And it doesn't seem to be a filler. The higher res, and the graphics ability seem to be quite a step forward. Apple has dropped the 'numbers' so it is the same as things like MacBook Pros, Airs etc which don't have numbers to donote revisions either. I suspect all future iPads will just be called iPads.
Of course at the moment people are still calling it iPad3 as things like cases etc are so specific.

Really? Viewing this thread on both, you can't see any difference in the text? Night and day IMHO. Then we asked my mrs to say which was the clearer display and she couldn't choose between them.

However, don't forget there are people who can't tell the difference between HD and SD tv, and also people who can't tell that a film is being shown in the wrong ratio...
Mines all setup now. Just convering some HD video to try. This is my first iPad although I did have a Touchpad.
So far i'm impressed. The screen is really superb. It wasnt bad on the Touchpad but this is something else.
Only one negative so far. I had a video app on the Touchpad called Kalemsoft Video Player. Using this the Touchpad would play just about any video format I threw at it.
I downloaded the iPad equivalent last night and it would not play a 1080p Mkv file that the Touchpad had no problems with. Well it did play but at about 6 fps.

Yup, this is the annoying thing, the ipad would play the 1080p file fine using hardware playback if it was in a different container (m4v), but because Apple are being their usual contrary self, they steadfastly refuse to support MKV hardware playback. So far i'm impressed. The new iPad has more than enough graphical power to do it, you just can't hook into it...
Ah well, next year, next iPad, maybe
I picked mine up an hour ago from the TNT depot, and first impressions (compared to my original iPad) are that it's lighter, brighter, sharper, and definitely faster (especially at rendering web pages).
Even simply launching apps is much quicker.
Migration took all of 5 minutes.
Currently got it sitting in my old Apple case until my new origami-type (i.e. multi-folding) one arrives.

Look at the writing under the icons......I put a 1 and a 3 next to one another yesterday and it is pretty obvious, text is slightly pixellated in the 1 (same screen as the 2) and is smooth and non-pixellated on the 3.Then we asked my mrs to say which was the clearer display and she couldn't choose between them.

Anyone else noticed the massive increase in app sizes due to the retina display?
Pages has gone from 96MB to 269MB. Tweet bot from 9.5 to 28, and iMove from 70 to 404. These are downloads - the actual installed app is likely to be even larger.
Don't think I'd we wanting a 16GB iPad.
Hmm I hadn't thought of that, but good point. Am downsizing from a 64GB that was never more than half full to a 32GB, hope I don't run out of space. Pages has gone from 96MB to 269MB. Currently typing on a, shock horror, keyboard on an iBook G4. Works a treat.
Are these really worth the hype? 50/50 about getting one.
I've had mine for 24 hours now & think it's rubbish. If it were priced around 250, then OK but not at the 550 I paid. Screen resolution is great, keyboard is better than I'd have expected. Otherwise I'm hugely unimpressed. My HP net book is much better than this. I bought it to view my camera pictures whilst out and about, but there seems to be no easy way to do this. I seem to spend my time shouting at the damn machine. Are these really worth the hype? 50/50 about getting one.
