Just done a side-by-side test between my old iPad 1 and my new iPad and it isn't even close. Text on the new one is much clearer and sharper. The improvement in photos is less obvious but I think they definitely look more life-like.
You might not care about the improvement, that's fair enough, but to say that there isn't a visible improvement is just bizarre.

What do you mean "I might not CARE about the improvement'? If its an improvement then Great.But I'm hardly the only one saying it, read the last few pages of this thread...
...and the Techies at Gizmodo which is World famouse geek site btw...they are, and I quote, "underwhelmed" at the display.
Unfortunately I feel the people shouting he loudest about the display are those who use it for stuff most of the rest of us don't or who have not owned an iPad 2.

I've speed tested loading graphics-heavy sites and whilst the speed of your net connection is the main factor again the 2 was equal to the 3 exactly.
My lad and I also loaded various newspaper sites, HD film trailers on Apples site and in every way there was no discernable difference in speed from the moment we both simultaneously hit the return key.

im, first off, take anything Apple related that Gizmodo publishes with a pinch of salt. Much like El Reg, they are not invited to the party, thanks to their iPhone-prototype-in-a-bar-escapade. Put them in the same box as the more rabid pro-Apple press and trust accordingly. (For further insight, do a search on Gawker)
Looking at the rest of the press that the iPad (3) has garnered, the consensus seems to be that the screen is knocking peoples socks off. I have all three incarnations here, and simply looking at this thread in Safari, across all three tablets, the difference with the latest version is stark. Now I don't claim to have remarkable eyesight - but the improvement in plain rendered website text is obvious.
Which makes me wonder whether you have a faulty unit. I'd seriously advise either trying to compare it against another iPad (3) if possible, or taking it back to where you bought it.

I'm not sure what to say really. To my eyes the text on the new screen is undoubtably clearer and sharper than on the old one. And this isn't in an unusual edge-case, I can see the difference easily in the web browser. I am comparing to an iPad 1 but as far as I know they didn't improve the screen in the iPad 2. I don't think my eyesight is fantastic either, I've wore glasses since I was a kid but on the other hand I'm not old enough for my eyes to have really gone downhill yet.But I'm hardly the only one saying it, read the last few pages of this thread...

As to Gizmodo saying the screen is "underwhelming", that is rather different than saying that there is little or no difference between the old and the new. The new display doesn't suddenly make things possible than weren't before, it simply makes things look clearer so I can understand someone being underwhelmed by that.
Side by side comparison of my ipad 2 64 3g (now my wifes) and my new ipad 3 64 4g show a significant improvement on the display, on sites like the BBC iPlayer, BBC news site and HD youtube movies. Also the apps open quicker and no slowdown so far. The sketch app is pretty cool, doubt I will manage anything of merit but it's fun trying.

This link has a very interesting screen story. They simply took close up photos of the ipad 2 screen and the new ipad displaying the same images (app icons) with the same camera, from the same distance, in the same lighting...As to Gizmodo saying the screen is "underwhelming", that is rather different than saying that there is little or no difference between the old and the new. There is a massive difference with the screen. I have terrible eyesight, and even i think it's vastly superior!
It's so much better using a screen where you can't easily see the pixels.
This is the first iPad i've owned (i've used them a lot previously though), and i think it's very good. There are a few negatives i have from using the device virtually continuously since i got it though. One is battery charge time, but that's not so bad, as it lasts a long time, and it can just be charged over night. I do find a lot of simple usability problems with it though, and wish Apple would think about that more (eg. putting more controls where you naturally hold it). I'd also quite like a smaller version that is easier to type on (without having to put the iPad down to type fast), and about half the weight.

king christ, are you really arguing about this still? they've squeezed twice as many pixels into the same space, therefore it stands to reason the pixels are smaller and less visible. nick heppinstall said:
