Even at full pelt it would not get hot enough to crack anything.

Agreed. The easiest way to heat my iPad up to the max is an extended Infinity Blade 2 session, and that only makes it something you'd describe as "warm".

I've just bought an iPad 2 64GB 3G. Should I cancel the order and get an iPad 3 16GB 4G for £50 more?
Will I use more than 16GB of memory?
Is it definitely worth the £50 more for less space?
I don't want to overstep £500.

I can't tell you how much space you'll use, but the screen on the 3rd generation iPad is truly remarkable.

If I were spending your money, I'd spend the extra fifty.

I'd do likewise but note that apps now take up much more space than previously due to graphics being upgraded to support the retina screen. This applies to all iPads but you'll notice it most if you have a lot of big apps on an iPad with 16gb.

I'd stick with the iPad 2. You're not comparing like-for-like, which would really show the difference.

You paid £450, and the equivalent iPad 3 is £660. I'd not say it was worth £210 more.

Comparing both screens side by side, using the new iPad 3s that have come into work with my iPad 2, I prefer the iPad 2 screen purely because it's brighter. Even at max brightness with auto turned off, websites that should be white are actually a light grey with the retina screen.

That may just be due to the variance in screens, though.

I have a perfectly decent ipad 1 3g, should I upgrade to the ipad 3?

I had the same and I now have a 64gb wifi only iPad 3 and it's brilliant, much better in almost every respect to thew iPad 1 however................

The iPad one does exactly the same job as a 3, just slightly slower and the screen isn't as clear - and that's it.

I bought it because I had the spare money, not because in truth I would actually benefit from a new iPad.

If you've got cash burning a hole in your pocket then go for it, it's great. If you need to borrow or need the cash for something else you really would be better off not buying it.

I'd say the same. In reality, not much has changed with the iPad. The biggest change is that from the iPad 2 it got a LOT slimmer.

I'd spend your money on a reduced iPad 2, personally. At the moment you can get an Apple Refurb 16GB model for £259.

I wanted a 32gb iPad but wasn't prepared to pay £500 odd for one so i got an Apple refurbed iPad 2 32gb for £319 a couple of weeks ago.

I'll probably upgrade to the 3 next year when they come down to reasonable prices.

I wouldn't bother, I prefer using my ipad2 rather than my ipad3. In my view the weight and battery life is a backwards step.

My biggest concern when using a 3 was that it got VERY warm. It is supposed to be quite typical for a 2 to get warm as well, but ours has never got warm.

My 3 doesn't. I know you're not lying, I don't mean that, but it's curious that some do and some don't.

I was completely underwhelmed by the 3 when it came out. But I'd promised my dad my iPad 2, so I duly bought the 3. And setting them both side by side, was promptly blown away. I can now read text heavy webpages in portrait, which oddly I really like doing for some reason. I think it's because it's like a magazine.

Could you get a temperature reading for it? Znet did a thermal image scan of a 'hot' ipad3 and it was no hotter than your arm, according to them in a test they did, and that was running resource heavy stuff.

Thanks for the reply guys. I'm sticking with buying the iPad 2.
I probably will use more than 16GB of memory considering i've got over 10GB on my iPhone4 at the moment and I don't even listen to music/watch movies on it so I think the 64GB will come in handy (maybe around 30GB of it biggrin )

Good choice. The screen on the iPad2 may not be as good as the iPad3 but it is still absolutely brilliant, so you're hardly going to suffer. biggrin

Thanks Durbster.
Anybody have any recommendations regarding data simcards?
I see the 3 network offer 10gig of data for £15 a month on a rolling month contract. Anybody use the 3 network for data? Do much streaming videos/youtube/sports?
Also there is T-Mobile, £10 for the year unofficially gets 500mb a month free, so 2 simcards would get me 1gig a month for £20 a year. Not sure if 1gig of data would be enough however.

I'd give the T-Mobile one a try. You can only go over and realise it's not enough.
