Could you get a temperature reading for it? Znet did a thermal image scan of a 'hot' ipad3 and it was no hotter than your arm, according to them in a test they did, and that was running resource heavy stuff.
How would you do that? It's not my iPad, but I could give it a try.

It wasn't so hot you couldn't touch it, but it was very noticeable.

Update - my new iPad was replaced with e new one. Whatever caused the crack in the screen, Apple's policy is to replace when there is just a single hairline crack. Tthere's no-quibble.

One of those thermal strip thermometers you put on a forehead?

My iPad2 64GB 3G order from Pcworld has been cancelled frown
They sent me an email saying that their was a problem with their system and that they're aren't any available. Not happy.
I was paying £426 for it. If I can get a iPad3 16GB 4G for £475 do I pay the extra?
Pissed off with PC World though.

eBay has a number of 32GB 3rd Gen ones for £475-510, which gives you more space to play with.
There are 16GB ones going for similar price as the PC World 2nd Gen one.

I see on another thread on here that Apple now sell polyurethane smart cases for the iPad - for only 4 quid more than the old smart cover! Good news. If you hadn't already bought a smart cover...and then a 3rd party leather case, like wot I did...banghead

Shame they are not also doing the same with the leather smart covers, else I would have been interested. I am on my second Belkin snap shield now and this one has cracked too, surely apples wouldnt crack the same.

I bought the poly smart cover when I bought the ipad; I like the feel of that - I think that material will work well as a back cover too. The leather smart cover seemed a bit overpriced to me at the time. Never really fancied those Belkin things; it felt a bit cheap, like it could crack easily.

I love the feel of the leather cover, cost was a little high but its an Apple product, you dont really buy anything from Apple cos its cheap. The Belkin snap shield seemed a really good product, it felt good being plastic and not silicon, but didnt feel plastic if you get my meaning, even has a metal strip at the back to keep the cover held back. The only problem is that they have both cracked in one of the corners (adjacent to the smart cover hinge), so a good product poorly made.

I might have to have a look at the new ones and put up with them not being leather.

Could be that now they've done a poly one, a leather one might be forthcoming. But maybe leather would be more difficult to shape to the back so its such a snug fit.Certainly at 39 quid as opposed to 35 quid for the old smart cover, the new case is better value.

Am so pissed off with Apple and there smart case.

Just had my new ipad for Bday Present 2 days ago from wife with a Smart cover.
Spent 2 days looking for a back cover, and now find out that Apple do this new version which covers front and back.
Unfortuntly wife cant send my cover back as it's been used. sent and email to apple to see what they can do about it.
Apart from that. I am loving my ipad 3. can't seem to put it down.

Don't feel too bad - I paid 35 quid for the cover and 43 quid for a leather case. Now I see I could have waited 2 months and got the 1 case for 39 quid... While I love my ipad very much, it does reinforce my negative feelings towards Apple a bit (never bought Apple gear before this).

my choice now is, am i responsible enough to look after my ipad with an apple smart case, which doesn't offer much protection, (only from scratch, very very small drops) or buy a good quailty case that will offer better protection, but will also loose that lovely feel of the naked ipad.

That's the same problem with iPhones.

My leather case is nice and I feel like I can carry it around in my backpack or whatever safely. I don't mind the extra bulk - my mp3 player and my ebook reader each have cases. Whether it would save the screen if I dropped it? I don't know. Don't fancy trying it out. biggrin

If the smartcover had been available when I bought the ipad - I think I'd be happy with it. Its quite a tactile surface so I can't imagine it dropping out of your hands easily.
