I've been holding off my Xperia X10 upgrade to see what was coming out. I'm on Vodaphone and they aren't selling the Xperia S in the near future. My brother went from the X10 to the SGS2 and loves it with a small reservation over size. Bearable but wouldn't want much bigger. Then there was all the hype about the One X but 2 things putting me off is that it appears to be quite a monster (physically) and there seem to be a few teething troubles if the other PH thread is representative.

So, I'm seriously considering the SGS3. Just laying down a thread watch marker so I can listen to the wisdom within smile

Don;t have much to add on the SGS3 as I don't do Samsung phones, but I can tell you that I am the proud owner of a Sony Xperia S got on an upgrade on Vodafone. Only issue I had to go through Phones 4 U. I felt a bit dirty in the store as I know what they are like, but it was worth it to get my hands on this phone. It's a brilliant upgrade from the X10, and I will happily bore anyone with how awesome it is.

However this thread is for the Samsung love-in, so if you want more info on the Xperia S just chuck us a PM.

The thingy today was a bit of a teaser, it linked to a couple of videos, warning: any sensitive iPhoners are best off not watching the second one hehe

and

Ok, so just marketing fluff..

It now appears we have three models of phone being banded about. You may of seen this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ei61wWOr4w

It now appears that this is a dev unit, they have been around since December and appear to carry the model designation i9300. This is not the final design by a long chalk. Its also believed that the final S3 will have a higher spec. The phone appeared on German Amazon touting a 12mp camera for example.
Some believe the unit in the video may become a "S2+" model or maybe the "Galaxy M" - Samsung apparently said they were going to launch a mid level phone, this might be it.

Also seen on German Amazon are accessories for an i9500.

Also, this turned up on XDA Developers last week:

So thats 3 models floating around ? One explanation I read said that the S3 may be released both with and without NFC and with an S2+ that would account for the three models..

In any case, whatever is going on we'll find out in 10 days...
So we potentially have

My lad has got the Nexus whilst I've got the SGS2 and I'd say that once you've loaded ICS into the SGS2 then all things being equal the SGS2 just about pips it on the hardwire.

However, the Samsung (Google) Nexus phone is custom built for Googles Android ICS Operating System and it does seem to operate more 'smoothly' with it than my SGS2 does. The difference is miniscule - but it is just apparent.
Cheers. Just curious really having been impressed with it in use during some testing at work.

That said Orange didn't have any Samsung offers last week so being both a) impatient and b) tight I've upgraded to a 4S for bugger all.

Any rough guesses on how much an S3 will cost, handset only?
I have a pretty new 4S that I bough outrightt so I wouldn't be lumbered with a contract, plan was to flog it when the 5 came out but I might be tempted to get an S3 in the interim.

I'm not sure about that picture, just looks like a galaxy nexus with the buttons photoshopped on.
If the pink colour is the person that took it why does that colour also appear in the bottom left on the background ? Could be its under glass or on a monitor screen I suppose.

Can't wait to see what they've got in store for us!

The biggest problem the SGS3 will have is... the SGS2. The phone is near perfect, I don't think I'll be upgrading anytime soon.

Blimey you're easily pleased.

Even the most hardened rose tinted spectacled fan would think of improvements to the phone!

Well, having owned half a dozen smartphones in the last years, I'd say the other ones have set the bar pretty low.

That said, I use it to listen to music, browse, manage my servers and network drives, watch the occasional movie on the road, use it for calendars and mails a lot, as a satnav on the bike,...
It's been flawless. Only thing it could use is a bigger battery, so I ordered the official one a week ago.

Been following this for a while, not a massive phone/android geek but very much looking forward to this.

I'm considering buying it sim free as im on giffgaff.

Don't reckon I'll have much change from £540.

How about a better screen? The resolution is awful.

Such a poor screen, (bright and colourful granted, but not sharp), and still has a terrible battery life.

Really? I know Apple have made the people go "dpi mad" because they HAD to double the resolution on their iPhone, but I, and a lot of people having a iPhone have a hard time identifying single pixels on a 200+ ppi screen. The iPhone screen is very sharp but to me it's a couple of things:
1) An overkill, which of course isn't bad
2) Too small
3) Doesn't look half as good as the screen on the SGS.

I've held lots of phones and I've held brighter ones, sharper ones, larger ones, but the SGS2's screen is ime one of the best ones out there.

Have you ever worked on an iPad? Apple still sells the iPhone 3GS and that has a 60% lower resolution. And some other very low end smartphones use that res.

Anyway, I can understand that a phone isn't for everybody, but to describe the resolution as "awful" or call it a "poor screen" is just .

As I said, I agree about battery life, but IIRC the SGS2 was designed with the 2000mAh battery, to be changed by the 1600 one before launch to market the "sleek design". A stupid move imho, but they offer the 2000mAh at a (small) price, which I ordered.

It's not duff, the dpi is shocking!

You have to zoom in quite a way to get text ledgable, in menus etc. you have to scroll a lot more than in other android phones, why? Because the resolution is so poor.

I can see more on the smaller screen of my old 3GS than I can on my SGS2. Granted the colours are brighter on the SGS2.

My old mans iPhone4S screen completely trouces my SGS2

I own an iPad 2, I've used an iPad 1 a lot (my fathers).

I thought the 3GS had a higher resolution than the SGS2, if it doesn't then it's even more damning on the SGS2 as despite the smaller screen and a lower DPI you can actually see more of what you're doing.

Compared to other current gen phones it is!

Yeah the sleek design thing is bonkers, should've just come with the larger battery, they Samsung lost that battle too didn't they?

Ok, I don't know why I'm doing this but: in what way?? I've owned a 3GS and the screen was st in comparison to the Milestone, let alone the SGS2. It was st in the sun, it was easily scratched, not nearly as sharp, "black" was grey and the colours were nowhere near as good.

Euhm again, no, it isn't. Please go to a store, or ask some of your friends, and put a Galaxy Nexus, iPhone 4, SGS2 and some high-end HTC next to eachother. The SGS2 is by far the oldest, yet the screen is as good or better than any of them.

Against who? Maybe not the slimmest at all points, but it feels a lot slimmer than the iPhone 4(S), and the weight is extremely low (even lower than the much smaller iPhone). They went for slim & lightweight in the end, imho they shouldn't have but to say that they lost that battle?

Anyway, I'm going to stop here as you're obviously trolling and I'm taking the bait.
