I've hated the Skeuomorphic (now that's a new word to me!) elements ever since they infected some NeXTstep apps. They just do not fit with the clean design of iOS and OS X. They look like something from the early 90s and, effectively, that's what they are. Why try to make an app look a bit like the old-fashioned physical item that it replaces? It makes no sense.
Yep, that's my view. Always struck me as being completely out of step with the hardware design ethos. Particularly apparent now with stuff like Win8 moving things on in that area. With Ive now running "human interface" in its entirety it'll be interesting to see the direction they take it in.Zod said:
I predict no more "filing rings" in Contacts, no more leather edging in Calendar and no more silly wooden shelves in Newsstand and iBooks for a start.
The mere thought of that happening has just significantly improved my day. I bloody hate what they've done to iCal, Contacts and Notes. Stu R said:

All the main product lines have been updated leaving only the unloved Mac Pro (my four year old one powers on happily regardless) and the odd screen that might be updated to "retina" resolution. There's some scope for iLife updates, but what else?

Can't see next year offering anything more than incremental updates.
Macbook Pro and Air will be due update, and Intel's new Haswell chips will be out next year so they'll probably be going in and it'll be one of the more 'under the radar' updates. I reckon they might try and go a bit thinner with them too. Touch more power, but mainly OSX updates.
Cinema Display is overdue an update, so that'll look like a 27" imac and won't be Retina Display. Probably an updated iPad at the end of the year, and at the more extreme end of the guessing spectrum iPad mini to get retina display, and an iPhone 5S with some minor improvements.

I know it's been rumoured for ages but I still think Apple could make a lot of money out of a TV product.....when you look at the IPTV offering from Sony or Smasung you just know Apple could do it so much better. Apple have demonstrated the ability to deliver products with much bigger margins than the competition so it could be very profitable.
Big question is not owning content so they can integrate a set top box...cable providers in the US are loathed to give that up. Of course they could just buy a cable TV company so they own the content.....

It'd be superb if they could, but there's no way in hell they can pull it off any time soon - it's just far too fragmented a distribution system at all levels. They'd not only need the networks on board, but the rights management issues would quagmire it in legal and copyright negotiations before it even got off the ground. They'd need to negotiate deals and contracts with every provider in every territory (even for the same shows), and ... well basically there's a good reason Netflix in the UK is worlds apart from Netflix in the US, and why Apple TV and iTunes is as far as they've got.
I see network technology as a convenient way around it for them. With device interconnectivity improving so quickly (you only need an Apple TV for air sharing and mirroring etc), it's not that big a stretch to envisage a deeper level of integration and interoperability between your Panasonic Plasma and your iPad, iPhone, whatever else.
Panasonic still create some of the most horrible UI experiences (look at their VieraCast for example, which I'm confident no more than 5 people around the globe use regularly) but they make utterly brilliant TVs, so it's not too farfetched to think they might want to let Apple et al handle that aspect of the process for them while they simply supply the hardware side of things - much like most folks will use Sky, Freesat, Freeview etc.

All they need to do is offer apps on the device. iPlayer, ITV player, 4OD, and so on, and whatever the equivalent would be in other countries. I can't help but think that whatever they did it would just be a TV with an integral Apple TV in it.Big question is not owning content so they can integrate a set top box...cable providers in the US are loathed to give that up. Yeah I can't imagine what else it could do really. I have Apple TV though, it is fantastic really especially as you can stream everything from all your devices to it on a nice big screen. Mind you they couldn't call the new product iTV in the UK for obvious reasons. Think the tv channel have already warned apple to not try it.

Are Apple really that st hot at software though? Surely the beautifully designed and executed hardware is the draw? I certainly didn't get an iPad or an iPhone in order to avail myself of iOS and iTunes. Gassing Station | Computers, Gadgets & Stuff | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
