New DVD to Macbook...

Hi all,

I've got a MacBook pro Retina. Im off away next week. I've just bought Prometheus on DVD to watch on the journey there.
Only problem is, The retina screen macbook has no optical drive...
I did search on here and found 'Handbrake' was the software to load a DVD onto the machine. I went through all the steps, seemed to be going well, an hour later I tried out the copy of the film It put into Itunes.
It appears to be scrambled though. Anyone know what could be the problem? or no way around this?

I tried ripping a DVD to itunes on my Macbook Pro yesterday with Handbrake and VLC and got no where. In the end I bought Ripit from http://thelittleappfactory.com/?ripit for £16. Ripit will either copy it directly or compress it and put in itunes. Worked for me.

Just torrent it. No more 'legal' than breaking DVD encryption.

Take the DVD back and buy it from iTunes store in HD for £13.99?

Will look a lot better on the retina screen in HD than from DVD as well.

I wouldn't pay £1.39 for Prometheus personally, but that's a different thread.

Or buy the blu-ray and get an iTunes digital copy for free

Edit - You could also try MakeMKV to rip the DVD. VLC will play the resulting MKV file with no problems. Both programs are free.

I think I'll take back the DVD, if possible..

I went to Itunes, and tried the 'rent' movie feature instead for £4.49, as I'll probably only watch it once. I now realise how terrible my internet connection is though... The HD version of the film will be downloaded in 24 hours apparently!

I use iTunes to buy and rent films, it is a good setup

It does seem to work well.

I was a bit shocked with 24 hours though! down to 21 hours now. Hate broadband in the countryside... my last download speed test was 1.32 Mbps..
I even managed to get 5.66 Mbps in Worcester using the iPhones 3G!

I bought RipIt a couple of years ago as it was outperforming Mac The Ripper (free). Over the last 12mths, however, it's become increasingly incapable of ripping newer DVDs and support from the manufacturer is non-existant (plenty of complaints on the 'net). I have no issue paying for software, but the manufacturer needs to provide support. Not a recommended app.

Recently I've used DVDFab which seems to work well with all the titles RipIt wouldn't.

Highlighted the problem above, try some other video program with more and beter codexes.

It may be the encryption when he ripped it. As I said earlier, far easier to just torrent the bugger, and use that.

Agreed, I started ripping my DVD collection but found it easier to just download the buggers.
Still, I found that files that gave me problems on iTunes or WMP were often no problem or less in other media players.
