Yep the Amazon Echo or Dot will both work, I have one of each. You just have to name each light so you can say "Alexa turn kitchen on"

Other option is to go with a Z-Wave hub like Smarthings then get Z-Wave wall switches. Not a cheap option but useful if you want to keep physical switches and want to plug in other devices to a single switch.

Philips Hue smart lighting starter kit (3 bulbs, 1 bridge) - usually £150, but will be discounted by at least 30% on Prime Day to around £100.

10th July, apparently.

Are there any other bulbs compatible with Hue other than Hue bulbs?

I've got 22 Colour Ambience GU10, 19 Colour Ambience B22 bulbs and a mixture of Iris, Bloom and Go lamps but there's nothing reasonably attractive in terms of lamps that you'd have on show. Other than buying normal lamps and putting Hue bulbs in them, are there cheaper alternatives?

Amazon Prime Day has some amazing Hue deals. The light sensor for £17.99, colour bulb for £22.49, etc...

Yup, just came here to say this. Stocking up. The motion sensor is a real steal and i've been thinking of another one for a month or so...

EDIT: But you can only buy one of each... frown

I've been adding to my Hue set up when deals come around. I can't stomach things like £50 for a bulb, when I know if I wait they will be half price for a day.

I have 2 motion sensors now, and just need a couple of white bulbs to finish the house. Not sure if I'd use a dimmer switch enough to justify. Missed out on the deal today (2 white bulbs, bridge, dimmer switch for £50).

Has any one seen the Ikea smart bulbs

http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/lighting/smart-...

They say integration with others is coming.

What is annoying is the speed/frequency of new products in the Hue range, yet Ikea seem to have hit the ground running with a range at launch that blows Hue's out of the water!

It seems that Ikea uses the Zigbee protocol which instantly suggests it will work with Hue, however they have no used it fully, so the Hue bridge rejects them.

Website says said:
  • UPDATE 27/4/2017**
We have had an exclusive comment from IKEA and Philip’s after contacting their press office for a comment:

Philip’s Lighting commented:

“Philips Hue follows the ZigBee Light Link standard. Several third party brands have implemented this standard in the way that the Hue system expects and can therefore be connected to the Hue bridge. The Hue app will recognize and display these third party products as generic ZigBee Light Link products. IKEA is free to make the same implementation choices. We cannot confirm if in that case the IKEA products would work with the Hue bridge without having done the required testing from our side.”

IKEA then said:

“We are working on a software update to be compliant with Philips Hue Bridge and will release it as soon as it is ready. We will continue the journey towards the smart home and making our products compatible with others on the market with the ambition to make it simple for the many people to create a better everyday life at home.”

Hopefully it will be sorted soon, I will definitely get some once it is confirmed they work together

juat about to order a starter pack, an extra bulb a couple of led strips and 2 switches. I'm wondering what people think is the better switch - tap or dimmer?

Our apartment has 4 light fittings in the open plan lounge/dining area which is the only area I want to control for now.

Whoever did the electrical design for our building was an idiot. The main room is open plan dining/living maybe 10m end to end. There's no switches at all by the front door, one switch for one fitting at one end of the main room and three at the other by the bedroom. You have to enter/exit in darkness and that switch on its own is just awkward.

Looking to have one Philips switch by the front door and another by the bedroom to have full control of the room - all on/off plus individual on/off for the 4 overhead fittings. All other functionality is a bonus but can just as easily change scenes and colours from the app.

Easier than that, you can program the lights to be on automatically when you come home

Yes but I doubt that's a feature I'd use. I'd prefer a physical button.

Or use a sensor? Then no need for any switches

The dimmer switches are wireless so you could make do with one, put the mounting plate by the front door and move it into the bedroom at night. Its simple to add more switches/motion sensors at a later date if required.

I've set up some routines for lights to come on around the house but can't figure out how to make them come on at a custom brightness, only the preset recipes.

Can anyone give me some guidance as to where I'm going wrong

What app do you use? Some of them don't give much flexibility. I use Hue Lights lately and it does everything I need.

Just create a scene at the brightness you want and save it and select that in the routine

I've been using the default Hue app.

I've saved a scene but it doesn't appear in the routine menu. Just the 4 default options and 4 light recipes

Have you saved the room and selected it first? All my scenes are there when setting up a routine
