Loving the Hue starter kit, wife bloody hates it so I need to talk her round.

1 in bedroom , other 2 in kids bedroom ( they love it)
I think this is actually a bigger issue than most people realise. Partners who just aren't into the smart home tech get quite annoyed quickly, especially when there is a reliability issue which there does happen with Hue.

I have motion sensors in my bathroom and after a certain time they come on dim rather than bright, but my wife seems to think bathrooms should be full brightness at all times so often just pulls the cord off and on to get it at max.

She calmed down a bit in other rooms once I got the Hue dimmer switches and switch covers off eBay. It seemed a little perverse to me buying all these fancy bulbs, hubs and voice control, then spending even more on just putting battery switches back in the original spot. But sometimes it's worth spending that bit extra just to keep 'er indoors happy.
Mines the opposite she’s embraced it. She tried “Alexa TV on” in a hotel the other day. She then realised why it didn’t turn on rofl

Ha, was looking at them with the same thought.

On a side note, the Ikea globe shades are superb and dod something similar, whatever the colour of the Phillips, they show the same colour even though they are white. So, set to blue, the shade turns blue etc.

Nice.

My lad will love his new light as it looks a bit like the Death Star. I got him the smallest size, which is plenty big enough for a bedroom. The Hue bulb easily fits with room to spare. Some folk on youtube have customised theirs to really make it look like the Death Star, some have even added motor so the light can open/close by remote control!

Weird déjà vu going on here.

I was just saying I fancy one of those in a different forum not long ago, those pictures look awfully familiar.

With the Hue pir sensor can you set it up so only certain lights come on at certain times of the day? Ive got 6 down lighters and say between the hours of 5am and 7am only want the 2 far lights to come on. Then in the evening 7pm onwards want them all on.

is this something that can be done or too complicated?

Yes it can be done, I can think of a few ways, with different outcomes that may suit.
The default app only offers 2 different time periods during which you can set different scenes to be activated on motion, however there's a Hue labs section in the app that has an option for 3 time periods. Set up a scene for just the 2 lights and another for all of the lights and use those to be triggered on motion being detected

If you want full control of exactly what happens then you can create multiple rules to suit using 3ed party apps or even srupt them directly using the API if you can be bothered. It's an extremely flexible system, however it can get confusing if you get down to the nuts and bolts.

I've got the led strips in my living room and man cave so far. Just about to order some for the bedroom but I see the price has rocketed somewhat since my last purchase.

OK, mildly jealous on that shade.
For reference, IKEA's FADO is another good one for housing a colour bulb. Works nicely for me.

Weird problem with the google home, it was claiming to be working fine and switching lights on and off, but nothing at all happened.

Then established that triggering a scene via IFTT was still working, just nothing that relied on direct Hue control. Ended up unlinking the account in the Google Home app and putting it back on, seems to be fine again now.

Anyone else had any similar problems?

Yep, I can imagine they would both look good with a colour bulb..

Perhaps not the best in daylight but the lamp shade I linked to earlier.Normally a sort of white.

But whatever colour, the shade is the same. I did try a translucent, smoked glass. Not the effect I was happy with so relegated that to the ordinary hues of white on the landing. Set that light to very low at silly o clock times with the motion sensor and it is great for up and about when you have to without waking anyone.

Nice light, and I can see how it would work well with the FADO lamp.

Really is the mutts with this bulb. One of the Phillips Hue automation thingies in "Explore" varies the colours and the two lights at stare rather subtle.

I have a few rooms with hue, but I have a question which my amateur google-fu can’t answer - hopefully the PH masses can figure out:

I have a Tap switch, but I would like to fit my bathroom with bulbs and a motion sensor, is there a way of ‘not including’ a room with the switch, at the moment, the switch affects all 3 rooms (e.g. living room off, and bedroom on etc) I have kitted out, but obviously don’t want the bathroom to automatically turn on (or off, if someone’s in there!)

I can’t check the app without actually setting up a new device, but can I just ignore a room so it isn’t affected by a press of a switch?

Also, my bathroom has 4 gu10 bulbs, which are possibly the most expensive hue bulbs around...

Yes, but you need to go into the hue app and modify the tap switch settings in the device setup/manager

The white ambient GU10 are more reasonably priced and will fit in a normal fitting, the colour ones are longer so can be problematic in some fittings.

Even cheaper are either IKEA Tradfri bulbs (7 quid for white dimmable) or Innr bulbs from Amazon. Do you really need colour or white colour temperature changeable bulbs in a bathroom?

Not at all, I was looking at the ambient ones - I have only the on/off ones in my house so far - I have no need for the fancier ones. I didn’t realise other bulbs worked with the hue kit - will look into the third party bulbs
