Hi all,

Does anyone have any experience of leaving/canceling AOL and if so, what happens to your long standing @aol.com email addresses?

My mum and dad have used AOL at home about 20 years and both have well used email addresses with AOL, plus my dad has one that he uses for his business.

They are all really simple addresses such as JohnSmith@aol.com, so he doesn't want to loose them especially as they are all used frequently especially with his business.

Do AOL cancel your email access after you stop using them for your internet connection or does it carry on for free?

Thanks.

I've got clients who've moved away from AOL ages ago who still receive emails through their AOL mail accounts.

No idea if that is a one off or the norm.

Left AOL for BT around 4 years ago, still have access to my old @aol.com email account.

I wondered the same when I left AOL and moved all my internet logins to a hotmail account, but didn't need to bother.

Have never received anything from AOL to say they are closing/charging for the account.

It might still work, but you can't rely on it, if you aren't paying for them AOL could just delete the email accounts.

Not so important for personal stuff but if you are using it for business then its a little more important.

What you could do is by a domain & email package so you'd have john@johnsmithscompany.co.uk and jane@johnsmithscompany.co.uk (normally you get say half a dozen specified accounts). This means that if you ever change ISP again it won't matter.

The cheaper option is to register gmail or hotmail addresses, which are free and give the same benefit in that they will never change if you change ISP.

The main benefit of getting the domain is it looks a bit more professional for the business.

I've kept mine when I left 2 years ago. They used to delete all your accounts when you left to try to keep you as a customer but that changed around the time I left them.

Quote from AOL help

" You can keep your AOL Email address forever, whether you have broadband from AOL or any other internet service provider. "

I left AOL/Talktalk a few years ago. All the email addresses still work and are in use.
