One for the Frivolous Purchases thread hehe

I do like my gadgets, but I can't seem to get along with voice-controlled things

EDIT: Sod it, I've preordered an Echo Dot. At least I can send it back, no quarrels, if I don't like it.

"The smaller Echo Dot speaker will launch on 20 October with a price tag of £49.99 ($49.99, €59.99).

This device enables buyers to position the Alexa voice assistant in additional rooms around the house.

Savings will be available for those who buy the Dot speaker in batches of six or 12"

Every room you say scratchchin

Gah, another frivolous purchase just ordered hehe

Apparently it will integrate with my Tado and (later on) with Sonos - plus I'm a sucker for a gadget.

It could be the turning point for me. I cannot believe they have not thought about it.

Of the top of my head, I think you have a choice of Alexa or Amazon.

Checked the app - Alexa, Amazon or Echo.

Might be a good idea if your OH is called Alexa.

Just ordered one. Because it can control my hue lamps. Somehow, but there's videos on that there youtube.

Signed up for a Prime trial (finally) so I got my £50 discount. Will cancel trial as soon as I can.

I've ordered the main one.

I thought you had to have a big one and the dots were extenders?

If you can only have a dot (or two, or three...) then I shall edit my order.

The dots are a lot less intrusive, in my opinion.

I just thought the Dot was just the Echo without the speaker?

Hmm, ordered as well, because Siri won't speak to my thermostat. Think it's time to get rid of that thermostat.

Hal would be an acceptable alternative...

"What are you doing, Dave?"

"I know that you and Frank were planning to disconnect me, and I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen."

Love the idea, but never going to work with Apple Music (for obvious reasons) and Nest is conspicuous by its absence.

Will have to make do with Siri + Raspberry Pi + HomeBridge.

Thinking about it.... seems ok for £99 but I wonder what the long term plan is as it seems that there is only so much you can do with it.

Works with my NEST thermostat, for sure.

It's a little limited in that you can tell it to set a temperature, but can't do the more elegant thing of asking it the temperature in the first place and then setting it accordingly.
