Gigaclear broadband
Discussion
I'm a fibre planner/surveyor for Gigaclear.
It is what it says it is.
Fibre optics to your home. Zero copper.
Download and upload equal
50Mb to 1Gb currently with 5GB in the offing!
We use backhaul bandwidth from a third party be that Vodafone, Colt, BT or whoever, then spur off into the countryside targeting places BT aren't in properly.
BT try and 'see us off at the pass' if they get wind of our locations....but in alot of cases the demographic out there demand 'more' and we're giving it to them.
The Owner is not in it for the profit, he sees it as a duty to get these areas the service they deserve and have yet to be given by the lazy bigger players. At the end of it all will a be a superb physical asset in the ground.
In most cases it sells itself, failing that the first takers speak very highly of our focused customer support, and 'as described' performance and word of mouth does the rest.
It is all privately funded but gaining massive momentum.
If there is a down side, it's the time taken to get to the areas we target, with difficult 'dig' and major wayleave hurdles with Network Rail and alike, in these instances a 'promise' of service which takes too long to provide doesn't do us any favours...but as a company we're trying! and have just undergone massive and aggresive expansion in terms of staff and targets.
Great little company, and I believe the 3rd quickest service provider in the world....perhaps..I'll check on that tomorrow...
Naturally then: Bite their hand off!

Quick moose - is there a roll out plan a series of areas planned ?
I have registered to see, and its a "No" but is there a halfpenny of chance to eventually (or should I say beat BT Openreach) to the area ?
I imagine if BT are playing silly buggers they probably don't publish anything until plans are well under way.I have registered to see, and its a "No" but is there a halfpenny of chance to eventually (or should I say beat BT Openreach) to the area ?
Have just submitted a request...get out here quick please
PM me address/area detail and I'll see what the plan is...
As said the roll out is key and not readily available to the ground troops... but I'll see what I can see and get back to you...
The trouble as I've mentioned though is that with the best will in the world the plans we do have can sometimes get held to ransom by land owners and obstacles.
So whislt I can't say 'when'...I could probably get accurate 'if' you're areas areon the radar...

I pay about £45 a month for 200MB broadband on Virgin (which I know doesn't help the OP) - it is much slower on upload (10 maybe?), but I work from home most days and it's never slow enough to be an issue!
However, I find that with proper fibre (I can't commment on BT's hybrid where I believe the last few (hundreds of) yards are copper) you tend to get VERY close to the 'up to' figure (all my tests report at least 200 and have always been close to the 'advertised' speed over many years now), rather than the very varied quality you get from copper.

Are you on one of Virgin's Fibre to the Home projects then? because 'normal' VM stuff whilst Fibre to the cabinet is still copper (coax) from there to the home...which I'm thinking is why your upload doesn't mirror the download...However, I find that with proper fibre (I can't commment on BT's hybrid where I believe the last few (hundreds of) yards are copper) you tend to get VERY close to the 'up to' figure (all my tests report at least 200 and have always been close to the 'advertised' speed over many years now), rather than the very varied quality you get from copper.

It does make me laugh when people (including 90% of the people I work with) talk of future proofing.
Many moons ago 2 cups and some string was future proof.
Then copper was the answer
now fibre...
Give it a decade or two and we'll be on to the next material...

I seem to recall seeing fibre into the socket on the wall, but I wouldn't swear to it.
You're definitely right about future proofing though, no-one's thought of the technology that will be commonplace when my kids are the age I am now!

The irony is that the demographic that can afford nice places in the countryside....and love the idea of the fastest conection are the same demographic that on the whole fight hard to stop their lovely countryside being dug up
We have had some clients paying for huge amounts of build to get the service though, 6 figure sums...
