Evidence of Facebook being purely coincidental.

I was running today, had my smart Garmin watch on with no microphone in the specification. About half way through, with my phone 4 miles away, I was talking to a new club member and the name of a running club member came up that I hadn't seen it quite some time.

When I went on my phone later in the day that very person was listed as a "person I might know". I don't recall ever seeing him included in that list previously.

I assume you're friends with the guy you were talking to? He probably searched for him after your conversation.

ah i see what you're saying. Well TBH i think both Siri and Google voice both listen. So does Alexa, so do they all.
Siri and ok google(I’m assuming) only locally listen for the key phrase, so that you aren’t streaming 24/7 using all of your mobile data. Siri only sends data once it’s heard everything after ok Siri.
The language processing isn’t too hard as even my car has a 100% local voice interface built into the media player. It’s good enough to understand something like find Ikea in Warrington or directions to home.

i'm not a conspiracy theorist, but you're just making assumptions.

Alexa has a seperate firmware chip that listens only for the activation phrase, on hearing this it then powers up the rest of the system (about 1 second) which provides the additional processing power to understand the speech.

Facebook knows you met with the other runner (GPS) then uses your shadow profiles to make the friend suggestion.

I don't use Facebook app on my phone. I don't connect FB to my Garmin Connect.

Do you have Whatsapp on your phone? If so, that will be linked to your FB.

the phone is the link. The 'scandal' appears to be that there is more data sharing between supposedly entirely separate apps than maybe people appreciate. If you think one rogue app is doing all the bad stuff then you're probably mistaken.

Speaking to work colleague the other day about holidays for the year.
She mentions Royal Carribean cruise in June.
I go home later in the day, click on Instagram and there it is, an advert for backpacking in Australia.
No really, it was an advert for Royal Carribean.

Do I care? Not really.
Can things like this become a major privacy breach in the future? Who knows.

(Haven't read the rest of the thread sorry)

I find this thread interesting and have, a few times, been convinced it's listening. To play devil's advocate, however, I've been talking non-stop about going to Croatia this year and not once has an advert or any content related to the place popped up. I've had averts for cruises, etc to other places so I'm tending to agree that I'm just selective with what I remember/choose to take notice of.

As in Watsapp used my position? Didn't discuss it on watsapp.

Quite tedious that FB used the Watsapp location of 2 people that were only briefly in the same location (I left my phone in the car whilst we ran) to suggest the Friend connection of a third party without actually suggesting the person I was in proximity with first.

I was having a pint with a friend a couple of weeks ago and he was talking about something called a port pipe.
I wondered what on earth he was talking about so he showed me a picture of one using the Amazon app.
A couple of hours later I went onto facebook and was shown a port pipe advert.

A port pipe.

Coincidence, doubt it.

Perhaps it’s already been mentioned ... but Zuckerberg himself masks his personal laptop mic and camera.

He knows just how many apps / programs are listening wink

I blank out my camera and have a monitoring app for it however you would think that a glorified IT company would know what to look for......

Just found out Duck and Go do a privacy extension for browsers . Interesting results when combined with Ghostery.
