The price is high, but as said, many very good alternatives (that people will probably go for).

If you're complaining at the price, the phone isn't aimed at you and there's plenty of very good Android devices that'll probably offer the same experience.

If you want a new mainstream phone (non-Chinese direct) with both NFC AND a fingerprint scanner that is no more than 5" you are looking at c £400+ rather than the cheaper end of the market, and it will likely not come with vanilla/or mildly tainted Android.

I was hoping the Pixcel would cover the above requirements off, but it doesn't and I can't find anything else that does so far.

It may well be I just get a 5X, the prices for which on Amazon have been steadily increasing from c £220 a few months ago.

A big meh from me too. Which is a bit of a relief as I'm only a couple of months into owning a LG-G5 (great phone btw) which replaced my Nexus 5X (another great phone)

I think I agree with the other posters regarding this being a 'halo' phone though. I don't think Google's objectives here is sales. When Apple release a new phone it becomes the default choice if you want to remain in the Apple ecosystem (or at least adds to a narrow choice of phones) so it's imperative that they sell well.

In this case you can buy this but ultimately the features will all be available on other phones at a better price point but google still get a chance to show the new Android features off in a phone they have full control over rather then relying on other manufacturers. They get their keynote speech and discussions like this off the back of it.

Previously they used the Nexus line for that and my understanding was they made a loss on those phones back in the days of the Nexus 4. That model isn't sustainable as they get more popular so they've come in with a new line that's higher priced and if they don't sell any so be it - they should still get good reviews and Android fanbois can point to them as being on a par with apple and the rest of us can continue with our middle range phones.

No tablets announced, gutted as the 7 is well overdue a overhaul.

I may opt for a pixel c soon as my Nexus 10 is on its last legs, be nice if I could get it for £300.

The pixel phone is nearly 3x what I paid for my Nexus 5. One plus looks the best option for an upgrade but I'm thinking my Nexus/Google device days are over

Just watched the announcement and I must say it piqued my interest a bit:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhsd2F8BIz0

Especially the "free unlimited photo storage"...

I backup all my photo's to the cloud and have been paying about 2€/month. I've been running out and have been contemplating the 1TB... but that's 10€/month!.

Anybody that ordered got some more details on that? Is it unlimited time? What happens in 4 years if I get another phone? Or after one year? The 1TB (let's call that "unlimited" biggrin) will work out at 120€/year... that puts the phone price in another perspective imho and I would seriously consider it tbh.

Just install Google Photos, and you get that today. Granted, its not unlimited storage if you want to store them at original size, but for me personally, pixels are a little audiophile. Most of the time, I don't need to blow them up to 60 inches smile

I'm surprised the 5X is being recommended with it's poor battery life
Anyone considering the HTC 10 shame the £100 off offer ended

When I use it as my storage, I like to know there's no compression done, I don't think I'm the only one.

As said, I've got 80gb now and with the little ones we both take a lot of pictures.

Anyone any info on the duration of this storage? Seems crazy if they'd add it for more than 2 years or without caveat...

This is funny . . . all you Android fanbois (!) moaning that Google and Samsung are charging the going rate for a smartphone biggrin

Apple charged a lot to develop the infrastructure, the so called eco system etc - and are now reaping the benefits and Google obviously now wants a piece of that pie . . . Apple Pie smile

Sorry - I can't help but gloat a little bit laugh

They are not showing off all the new features though. If they were it would support Tango. As it is the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro will be the first phone to support it. Far cheaper than the Pixel and has a better camera as it can do depth perception which is required for Tango.

HTC10? What has become of that.... I never really saw it advertised with any of the big carriers. I heard in the US at least, they slashed the price significantly (i.e. $150 off). It is by all accounts a great phone and has the same hardware as any other flagship device (SD820, 4GB ram, finger print scanner, good camera, even HTC sense is toned right down to barely more than stock android). It just doesn't seem to have registered with people!

I've only HTC phones for years but just got sick of them not getting the latest version of Android backported.

So I stuck around for this Nexus release. Except it's not a Nexus. Not sure what to do now.

Just noticed the iPhone7 I'd have is at the same price... but has a trade in programme supposedly offering up to £375 off. In a couple of years the Pixel will be worthless, but if an old iPhone (more likely to still be getting updates too) has a simple trade in programme it might be the better route.

I've never even considered an iPhone before. frown
I specced a 128gb 5.5 to £829 which is exactly the same as the big 128gb iPhone 7. I prefer Android but I know which of these 2 will be worth more in 2 years time so buying the Android one is throwing money away. I think Google might have just pushed a few people over to Apple.

My contract is up this month so I was waiting for this but now I'm stuffed again. I think I'll keep my Z3 and go sim only for a while until something good at the right price appears, I'm not paying more than £500 for a phone for the amount I use it.

Huh indeed?
Where are all these so called fanbois camping out in front of a store, waiting to hand over the best part of 1k for a phone that hasn't even been reviewed yet?
Instead criticizing it on price and looking for real reasons instead of personal justifications?
hehe yes, exactly the same thing, we fandroids.

That's an odd thing to say.

If they needed to charge extra so they could invest in their ecosystem, they wouldn't currently be sitting on vast mountains of cash.

Besides, it's probably quite a bit cheaper to create hardware that works exclusively with your ecosystem than having to support a large set of disparate standards and specifications.

Put simply, Apple charge what they do because people love throwing money at them, but I'm not convinced Google are in a position to perform the same trick.

People are used to paying a premium for Apple, but we're used to getting stuff from Google for free.

Sounds like despite selling nexus phones as a way to get android updates first google shaft their customers release an even higher tier phone that has exclusive android update and newer version.

Honestly if I owned a nexus I'd be pissed.

Yep, a similar situation to me, I've got a Z3 on SIM only and was hoping this would hit the spot. It's a curious point in the market to pitch it and I can't really see who it will appeal to other than Android superfans.

Think I'll wait for the Xperia XZ to settle down for a few months and the price will surely drop. Quite fancy one in the rather nice metallic blue.

A guy at work has a OnePlus X and the motherboard went on it. The 'support' was atrocious and it was over a month before he got it back. Hopeless communication, waiting over an hour for a tech web chat only for someone to clearly working from a script to respond with rubbish such as "plug it in for 12 hours and call back if it still isn't working,". They finally said they had lost it only for him to find the repaired handset waiting for him at home etc etc. It's certainly put me off considering a OnePlus 3.
