We had had enough of Virgins CONSTANT price increases and utterly poor service so ditched them after paying near £40 per month for bb only!

Now with Plusnet and the difference is noticeable. Overall package speed is listed as lower, but we consistently see higher speeds due to the lack of throttling Virgin applied. The package is cheaper too so it’s a win win. Very happy with it, and won’t be going back to Virgin.

An update on my recent Virgin Media retentions experiences.

So, I came to the end of my 12 month contract in early July, which coincided with Virgin Media's announcements of mass price increases. Definitely time to submit my notice to leave and do the annual retention dance! I was on £28 per month for 100mbit broadband only, which had gone up from £26 earlier in the year due to their RPI increase.

Spoke to a chap in first line retentions who initially could do no better than £20 credit towards my next bill. After some back-and-forth, with me quoting a £26 a month deal for 75mbit broadband from EE with an additional 10GB of data for my mobile, he eventually upped it to £50 credit towards my next bill, but still with the caveat that it would jump up to £37 in the New Year. Decided to hold on for the outbound retentions team to call me during the 30 day notice period, so ended it at that.

As per previous years, I expected two attempts from the outbound retentions team to try and call me with more compelling offers, but 26 days passed without a single call, missed or otherwise. I called Virgin back to cancel the cancellation, citing some BS about EE running into some delay with the line (a half truth, as I am the only one without a physical BT line to the house on my street).

Gave it a week and I called first line retentions again to cancel, again quoting the EE deal. The guy this time didn't even bother to try and keep me, saying he couldn't even come close to that deal and was quite impressed himself by it. Once more, I entered the 30 day notice period.

Just yesterday, I received a retention offer via email, which is new to me in the near 4 years I've been with Virgin Media. The offer is for £27 a month for 12 months, going up to £42 in the 13th month if I don't move to a new deal or move elsewhere. No mention at all of RPI/mid-term price increases in the small print from what I can see. I decided to go for it, as it's less than I'm paying now and only £1 more expensive than what I was paying at the beginning of the year. The link (completely kosher) funnelled me through to a form, asking for my name, house number and postcode - but it doesn't work upon entering my details, citing them as incorrect.

Have called Virgin Media that I wish to take up the deal, but cannot due to their shoddy form. Apparently, somebody from outbound retentions will try and call me...

😂 I’m paying £45 per month (price rise soon of £4.50) for fake 200mb broadband and a stupid hub.

...and FYI, your price will still increase with the annual RPI increase, but not the mid-year £3.50-£4.50 rises (mine was £3.50 which equals an 8.5% rise).

There was a link at the bottom of the latest letter to https://virginmedia.com/yourbroadband which includes the statement:

Virgin Website said:
What if you’re currently on an offer?

If you’re currently on a promotional offer with us, we will honour it. So that means your increase will happen when this offer comes to an end. You can see the details of your current offer on your latest bill.

We’re making changes to our pricing, but as you’re currently enjoying a fixed price each month, these changes won’t affect you right away.
When I queried this I was told it includes the loyalty/retentions discounts - so I'm waiting to see what actually happens to my bill in October, and have the call handlers name and the date & time of the call to argue the toss.

Unfortunately my only high speed wired option here is Virgin. The rest are only guaranteeing 30mbps (no FTTP/FTTH). However, I can get over 100mbps (at quiet times) on my EE 4G Max phone plan (as low as 30mbps at peak times), so maybe an unlimited EE 4/5g home broadband package would offer an alternative.

I'm paying £27/m for 100mb and a phone as a 'new customer'. I also got the email saying they would maintain the price as I was on a fixed deal for a year.

I went through Quidco for £100 cash back.... I'm still waiting for it!

I have both a Virgin and a BT line so can swap ISPs at will, I now change every year to get the best deal. Virgin to BT to NowBB and back to Virgin.

Yep. Once you've set up both lines, you can play them at their own game.

£45 a month here for 100Mb broadband, basic TV and unlimited phone calls. Went up to £60 (from £50) last month, so I phoned them up to complain, 1st agent couldn't do anything so I asked to be put through to cancellations who were able to get it back down to a figure I'm happy to pay.

Hi
Out of more than just curiosity by chance could you check what upload speed you get via Ookia's speedtest ?
Very interested as have heard from a few people there can be something a bit odd with the 50mb "cut down" thing.

Was paying £46 for 100mb + Basic TV package and Phone, was going up by another £3.50.
Went straight to the cancellation no. and got it down to £41 for the same package, tried to get rid of the TV as the Tivo never gets used as have a freeview recorder with my main telly however its more expensive to just get internet and phone.
Pleasant girl to deal with unlike the cocky p....k I had to deal with last year who was going on about my download usage etc etc.

Hi ya. thanks for doing that. it's about right for Virgin 50 meg
I know 3 people who in the last year have opted for a bare bones reduced speed as retention deal ( we re talking sub £20 for BB/Weekend calls/ basic TV ) Of those at lease one person didn't get a reduced upload speed for whatever reason.
I was just curious to see what yours was

I have been on their 50MB broadband for years, they have on several occasions tried to get me to upgrade to 100MB (for extra ££ obviously) but I have no need for it and checking the D/L speed at various times of the day/night,the slowest I have seen is 45MB

Phone up today because they sent me my latest bill

I'm currently paying £73 for Full House Bundle with BT Sport, 200mb broadband, V6 box, I've been with them for nearly 20 years and every year I have to phone up and spend an hour on the phone just get a bit of discount. In fact they once gave me £7 loyalty discount and then wiped it out in October with a price increase,

This time they wanted to add Sky Sports, Sky Movies, 500mb broadband for only another £20, so that would mean I would be spending nearly £100.

I told them to go foxtrot Oscar and told them price should be coming down not up.

What are people paying as I used to see people getting Full packages with Sky sports for less than £50, someone was getting it for £37 a few years ago because they threatened to go to Sky.

I even mentioned to the lady on the phone that if I left and went to Sky, I would get a far better deal if I returned to Virgin than I am now. They seem to try and convince you are getting a better deal by spending more on pointless upgrades. I mean 200mb is fast enough. I don't need upgraded to 500mb unless I'm not running a production company.

So what are people paying now?

Just leave them, get yourself a Freeview/Youview box for recording and pay for BT seperatly if you really want it. You shouldn't be paying more than £50 for what you have.
