Here's, quite possibly, an easy one for the more Apple experienced among us.

Got an iPhone today and have plugged it in and done all the relevant bits to it. Have had an iPad for about 4 or 5 years which rarely gets plugged in as its only really for little 'un to use (our phones do what we need!)

I've added a couple of apps to the new phone today, but when I went onto the iPad earlier, the new apps had also downloaded on there. I am using the same Apple ID for both (I think?!).

Is there a way for it NOT to do this? I've told iTunes that it was a new phone and am not (knowingly) telling it to also update the iPad, so I can only assume that it thinks I want everything to be on everything?

Help!

Just log out of your iTunes account on the iPad and sign back in if/when needed, unless somebody knows better?

All my kids/wife/mum/dad iPads/iPhones do the same as I have my account on all of them.

On the ipad, go to settings->itunes and app store
find the setting for automatic downloads of apps, turn it off

There is a setting, I forget where, but sure Google will show it if you can't find it.

Essentially you can say, download and install apps on all devices. You want to turn this off.

Don't signout of your Apple account, that'll just be a ballache, especially if you want to sync other items or use handoff.

EDIT:

Try under settings -> iTunes and App store on the iPad. There are some toggle switches to say what it should auto download and sync.
