RIP Photobucket...

Ah but there's the rub. Only certain things can be backed up. You can keep backups of the photos you post to Flickr, but not all the metadata associated with them - especially comments, faves, etc. Were Flickr to fold, I would still have my photos, although as someone posted earlier, I may not know exactly which of the thousands of pics I have locally are the ones I posted to Flickr so I would suffer a loss (or at least an inconvenience). I would also lose all the views, faves, and comments. I'd also lose the keywords I associated with the pics when I posted them to Flickr.
It would be like trying to say that you should back up your seller ranking and feedback on eBay.
However, I totally agree with your point - everything that you put on the cloud should be backed up locally to the greatest extent possible.
In my case, any images I upload to my gallery are placed in a local folder called 'published', so I can keep track of which images I have uploaded. It would be like trying to say that you should back up your seller ranking and feedback on eBay.

In my case it's largely irrelevant however, as my galleries reside on my own hardware* anyway, but you make some good points.
- a virtual machine which is backed up in it's entirety every night.

I wouldn't put anything on an internet service that I didn't have backed up at home unless I was prepaired to lose it for good.
Good advice. And similarly, I'd be very wary of running my business data on a cloud hosted ERP system. I'd be wanting to do loads of due diligence on that one.
I've deleted everything I dont need from my Photobucket, I'm left with a couple of albums I want to keep, but I cant download them. Each time I click download album, do the verify thing then it just says something went wrong and to try again. I try again and it doesnt do anything.
Any suggestions? Anyone had similar? I really dont want to have to go through 200 pictures one by one if I can help it.

Have you tried different browsers? And maybe a different internet connection? If it's the same behaviour across all then it's probably them. Any suggestions? Anyone had similar? I really dont want to have to go through 200 pictures one by one if I can help it.

For me the annoying thing is it's impossible/ massively time consuming to go back through all my forums threads/ posts with pictures hosted on Photobucket and re-point them to Flickr or whoever. I've been a member for 10 years and they really have screwed us all over
Never used pb, but do they not give you access to the 'referer' part of the web request to your image - as that will contain the url of the page with the image.Wayners said:
I don't think Flickr or imgur allows you to create img links? Well I couldn't.. So you can't place a picture in a forum like this. I use https://imgbb.com/ it's a free alternative to photobucket for img links

And.. before anybody considers using this service you might want to read this<snip>

IMGBB image upload

The imgbb.com image upload option has been removed from the forums due to them adding increasing numbers of extra links to posts. This was in addition to the acceptable links that were embedded with each image (making the images click-able). Due to the way the upload works, we are not able to control what they can add to your posts with your photos. Until now it has just been their spammy, poorly worded extra links, but there is also the potential for them to add advertising or worse. This is simply not acceptable to us so it had to go.
There are other ways you can upload and share your images on the forums but you will need to register on a suitable image hosting site, such as Imgur, Flickr, and 23.

What will be particularly interesting is to see how many renew that subscription in a year's time, or whether they spend the next year migrating to another service and then ditch PhotoBucket in a year's time.
I did consider paying the one years sub, while I uploaded all my pics to the specific forums servers one by one, but then decided I wasn't bothered enough about old build threads to do it. I have hardly used Phutophuket for several years and haven't built anything for a long time..... RBH58 said:
Forums are going to have to start hosting or have no image threads. This means they'll have to start charging membership.
The commercialisation of the Internet moves into its final stages.
I'm on a BMW motorcycle forum that hosts its own a pics, but they do have to be very small in size. However, it is surprising how good pics can still be at very low MB size. The commercialisation of the Internet moves into its final stages.
A couple of hundred kb is all you need for a decent enough forum pic really. I suppose this is also part of PB's problem. As cameras have got higher quality with huge files per pic, and faster upload times more and more bandwidth was getting used.
How many people resize and save at a lower file size before uploading? It's something I've always done and been conscious of since the days of dial up so they loaded quickly

I've always done that too..........however, I suspect its a generation thing. Those of us used to using desktops/laptops will probably be more likely to do this, and store originals on hard drives etc.
I bet many using just phones etc., won't?

Quite. a 1920 x 1080 JPEG image with even a 'High' quality is less than 200KB and you really don't need more than that in all honesty. As you say, cameras get ever better, and people don't understand (or care) that a 5MB image simply isn't needed, or desirable, on a forum post.
