Thinking of ditching the smartphone...
Discussion
I use my Lenovo P2 in power saving mode. It lasts me all week before I need to recharge it, given a reasonable amount of talk time and the odd time I need to research something.
I found felchbook to be a massive waste of time other than keeping in touch with people who don't live nearby and even then I'm not interested in what they had for lunch (unless it's really spectacular).

I deleted the Facebook app over 2 years ago and it's great to break from it. It stopped me posting status updates altogether and I've got a lot of time back from it. I completely agree that is is addictive, and i'm certain of he negatives surrounding social media. It portrays a completely false image upon life and can make people feel they're missing out.
I'm still addicted by information so always use the internet to look for anything and yes there's a level of addiction there too. I spend a fair amount of time on here but some of this is genuinely useful.
Life is heading in a more insular direction. Sometimes you have to break it all up just to see what you never actually miss.

Thanks for all your input guys!
Over the last couple of days I haven't used facebook at all since removing it from my phone. I haven't missed it so I will save some time/addiction there.
I've also done a bit of research into a decent clock radio and since purchased myself a Pure Siesta Rise. My previous one was so bright it kept me awake so I never used it. The Pure has an utterly fantastic screen that dims depending in room light conditions. Its a fantastic alarm with a great UI and allows me to set up to 3 alarms. I'll use 2. One quiet radio to gently wake me, and an alarm about 15mins later to tell me to get up. I cant recommend this alarm enough, its not the cheapest, but Pure have a good rep.
Last night was the first time I can remember where I didn't have my phone in the bedroom, and I'd like to keep it that way. I read a book instead. I must say I did sleep a lot better. The temptation to pick up the phone to answer "I wonder what/if/when...." was removed by not having the phone in the room.
I'll keep this thread updated with progress!

I leave mine in my office, switched off.
If people really need to get hold of me at 2am, they can either keep ringing my landline or bang on my door.
I don't even bother reading in bed. Get in, listen to the radio with my eyes closed for a bit then switch it off.
This thread inspired me to have a facebook friend cull last night.
Going through the list, it was quite surprising the number of people who I literally have no interaction with what so ever. People I haven't seen in 5, 10, 15, 20 years etc. and even though theyre on my facebook, I rarely interact with them apart from maybe a like on a picture. Quite a few people I didn't even know haha.
So now I'm down to a tiny 25 or so family and friends I actually want on there to keep up to date with family stuff. The friends still on there are those I actually see regularly in real life. The rest have gone. Old work colleagues, school "friends" I haven't spoken to in 20 years etc.
Quite pleased with myself really. I did initially delete the app from my phone but soon realised I needed it as we use facebook at work to chat between the team (we're in two locations) and to run the work facebook pages. I often use my phone to take pictures that get uploaded to the pages or to the chats. Having to plug my phone in to use a PC to get the pics on to facebook is an annoyance when I could have done it with a single press before. I;ve turned off all notifications for it though.
I also deleted a number of pages I followed. Ladbible, God, Unibible etc. To name a few. All they do is spread clickbate and negative st I really don't need.
I continually get frustrated and angry with the stuff I see on facebook but it's always tempting to see what that new notification is all about. Social media my arse. It discourages socialising and encourages bullying, especially with children and teens.

slack is much better for work stuff
I tried Slack for our team, but it didn't seem that different to WhatsApp. What's the big benefit over WhatsApp?its scriptable, you can create an automated slackbot to provide team members with a useful resource of information and functionality, and also intergrates with things like
https://trello.com
https://trello.com/platforms/slack
https://ifttt.com/slack
although whatsapp does have full end to end encryption, and youre already familiar with it

An alternative option for the photo thing is to use the Dropbox app, which can be set to automatically upload photos to your dropbox when on wifi. If you then have dropbox installed on your PC the photo will automatically sync to the PC as well. I'd guess One Drive and other online shares can do the same thing too.SystemParanoia said:

well I've deleted facebook from my phone today. Interestingly (before I uninstalled it) facebook congratulated me for posting/updating for 2 days in a row and suggested that life was better when you shared - whatever. I don't think i'll miss it.
The Facebook app is awful (on Android, anyway). It takes a load of memory and storage space, consumes CPU cycles and spies on you intensively.Even if you do still want to use Facebook, the app should be deleted. Their mobile web interface does the job and doesn't mess up your phone and privacy to nearly the same extent.

Good idea. Never thought of that but as I don't want to pay for cloud storage, it wont work. What does work though is google photos, which I already know my phone backs up to whenever its on Wifi so I'll just use that instead! Thanks for the idea.
