No way your going to be happy with a £500 machine after having a MacOS device I'm afraid.

most £500 machines wont even have a SSD.

Had my 17" early 2011 macbook pro battery replaced at Apple store. Took about 2 days and cost £139 all in.

If not, anybody recommend a decent general purpose lap top for £500 or thereabouts. Spending £1000 on a school kids lappy is not happening again.
A macbook pro 15 is a £2k machine, no way to replace that with a £500 machine.
A 1k machine... maybe.

Probably better to repair it then, the daughter would be far happier.

I really expected more than 18 months out of the bloody thing when I shelled out all that folding stuff for it.

It might not even be the battery that's the problem.

Why not book an appointment at an Apple Store, they will test it and tell you what needs doing, as it is relatively new they may well do you a special rate, or even fix for free if you push them.

The guy in our local computer shop opened it up, you could see one cell was all swollen and fat.

He took the number off the battery, ordered an Apple replacement, but they still, apparently, sent him the wrong one.

I shall deal with a proper Apple dealer, get it done properly.

That's what I would do, no point spending ££££ then letting somebody "fix it" for ££

Unfortunately Apple wont deal with my 2010 "vintage" MBP now so I bought a battery myself.

Hmm, at least those were relatively straightforward.
Can't wait 'till all that glued/soldered down throwaway junk they sell now becomes "vintage".

PS: That's not a dig at Apple solely, before any fanboy throws his purse at me.

Yeh, I'm using my missus Galaxy S7 Edge at the moment as she now has a Note 8 and Google have refunded me for my Nexus 6P and my new Pixel XL 2 isn't being delivered till next month.

She dropped it a few months ago so the front and rear is cracked, thought I would buy a new front and back and do a DIY job on it. Read the guide and decided not to.

So, took it into a proper Apple dealer, paid the £50 fee for inspection...... and they came back today telling us it needs a battery as well as a new logic board, or some such part.

£800 yikes

It simply ain't gonna happen.

So, best lap top under £500 ?? Something with an i5 chip, or so I have been told is best.

If it's only two years old then get it to an Apple store, I'm sure they will fix it if it's a logic board, it should not fail in two years. Have you called Apple tech support?

Was it an Apple approved dealer or an Apple shop? I didn't think Apple shop/genius bars charged for running diagnostics.

It's a shame it was purchased abroad and not in the UK as you may have had a strong case under UK consumer law.

Apple changed my logic board for free and it was well out of warranty. You're not trying hard enough.

I called the Apple support number, they phoned me back, booked an appointment in Telford, Stormfront the place is called. They booked it in, sent it off, filled out papers, charged me £50 fee, and they phoned me again today to say it is fubared.

I would try the "genius bar" at an Apple Store rather than an authorised repairer; they have much more latitude.

Is it working at all - if it's plugged into the mains?

If so, download Coconutbattery - http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery and see what it says about the battery.

I said "most" not all.

The reason I said most, because Chromebooks come with SSD and are half of the original budget.

I have no idea what a “Genius Bar” is, and I apparently don’t have any idea how to find a genuine Apple Store. Apple themselves sent me to this place, Then this place sent the MacBook off to Apple technicians. Or so I was told.....
