Booby trapped versions inadvertently made available to downloaded in August and September.

All sorted now but you should update, although Piriform say no harm has been done.

If you don't use Ccleaner why not? wink

A report from a company selling software advising against using free software, call me a cynic but why would I believe them?

I've used Ccleaner for years, it's always worked well doing what it says it will do and I've never had to use the registry back up feature.

A Malware/Antivirus application isn't the same as a registry cleaner and drive optimiser, perhaps they were useful when we all had 100mb hard drives but you don't need cleaners today.

I have used ccleaner for many years - for getting rid of unwanted temporary files and also 'cleaning' the registry. Never experienced an issue with it.

Used it on my parents laptop and in-laws laptop and the boot times decrease significantly after running and internet explorer seems smoother too. I will have to measure it next time I have the time with their PCs. (only visit a couple of times a year, so once the grandkids have installed and uninstalled stuff the grandparents seem flummoxed as to why they 'need' a new PC.)

Don't update. Uninstall and never use it again. They cannot be trusted.

I wondered why I got an automatic download and install (after confirming I wanted to update, of course) rather than having to go to a mirror site etc as I normally do with my free version.

CCleaner is definitely infected - Kaspersky AV found it on my PC this morning and is currently running a disinfect routine

Yes, Linux is completely immune to cancerous log files in locations you've never heard of! rofl

CCleaner is fine for disk cleanup, startup task removal, and offering to uninstalling apps that Windows doesn't offer.

Looks like it was 5.33 and only the 32 bit version. Only one of my machines installed 5.33 and the it was the 64 bit version so hopefully (and scans seem to confirm) I didn't have this installed (searched the registry as well and I cannot find any of the offending keys) .
Ccleaner as a registry cleaner wasn't its primary function - the temp file remover and startup/menu item tools were the main reason for it. Now Avast own piriform I may have to drop my recommendation for it as I don't trust avast not to ruin the lightweight tools piriform provided.

That's just Kaspersky reacting to the news, they hadn't found anything until it was announced so I wouldn't read much into that.

Latest looks like the malware was intended to create back doors in tech companies possible for IP theft. So whilst this damn thing may have been installed on your pc's it is unlikely you are the target (850,000 machine infected - 20 were targets)
