I see quite a lot of people who have a proper desktop computer as their primary machine but have abandoned laptops in favour of an iPad. This is quite a good combination I think. The screen on a £300 iPad is still as good or often way better than many laptops costing 2 or 3 times the price...
Agreed, just for games and watching movies they are hard to beat. Though you'd want more than 32GB then, which is at least £430.

Still not as much as a decent laptop, but they seldom survive for 5 years like the op's, and if they do they are hardly the last word in useability, while a 5 yo laptop will do most stuff just fine.

For my use, an extra ultraportable just made more economical sense while being actually better for my use.
To me at least it seems like the tablet filled a niche that actually is a lot smaller than the sales suggest. A third portable device. And one for every one in the house of course, unless you get one that allows user accounts.

This is an interesting point...

The 2017 5th gen iPad probably would not age too well, it uses the now 3 generations old A9 processor for starters, and while 2Gb of RAM and 32Gb of storage is just about fine for now, I don't think it will take too long before that becomes an issue.

Increase the storage and you're nearly up to Pro money, which is likely to be a far better long term proposition, for starters, you get the 64Gb storage, 4Gb of RAM (IIRC), better screen and the A10X is much, much quicker than the A9 in the budget offerings and actually on a par with some quite expensive Windows based machines.

To be honest, if you want an iPad now, I'd be tempted to try and get a second hand Pro over a brand new 5th gen, and I'm pretty confident it will still comfortably outperform whatever budget model is released this year.

laugh Every meeting I go to, almost everyone has an iPad. Some have Surfaces.

I have both - different uses.

do you use either one depending on who you are meeting with, so you fit in with the group?

I've got an iPad Pro with keyboard. I bought it last summer and my MacBook Pro hasn't been turned on since. I use it for normal browsing and media etc as well as editing 4k video, photos, doing some design work as well as work MS Office documents. It handles it all easily, which a similar priced MacBook air certainly would not have done.

It's not perfect, excel is a pain to use on it, but it's a hell of thing for it's size and weight.

if you've not used your MBP since, did you ever need a MBP in the first place?

Yes. It was a 2010 model bought new and iPads were no good for photo and video editing back then. The first iPad was released about 3 months before I bought by MBP.

is touchscreen better for photo editing? I am fairly amateurish when it comes to photo editing so i don't tend to do touch-up or anything, but maybe touchscreen / stylus would be better if i did.

Exactly. All my family members, friends, friends parents, friends kids, colleagues, colleagues’ kids etc... all have at least one iPad each - I only know of one single person who had an android tablet (and that’s only as he is too tight to buy an iPad even though he admits the ASUS tablet he has it rubbish and an iPad would be infinitely more useful and used)

Pretty sad if you have surveyed all those people on their tablet usage.

I do, I have a mini2 and a 2017 iPad - used for different things, I also had a 12” pro but lost it

Hardly makes me a weirdo that I have devices used for separate purposes

I’d suggest the weirdo is the person who is blind/ignorant to the mass appeal and wide ownership of such devices

Not really, you see them with them, using them, talking about apps they’ve just bought and are using etc...

It’s not like I sent people a survey monkey lol

A laptop is a totally different device and not part of this in any way shape or form, it’s wholly incomparable to an iPad

My mini2 is used for movies and general media consumption while working away, hotel and travel booking as well as email and diary management for work

My regular sized iPad is used for general browsing, Carista, odd games (DOTT and GTA3 mainly)

I also have an iPhone X - calls, music and audio books, sat nav with Waze,, personal emails and messaging only

Plus a works iPhone 8 which is exclusively work emails and calls

I could combine the iPads but then that would be inconvenient for me. Plus I dislike using my phone for browsing and prefer a larger format

This isn’t an uncommon scenario FYI

Same,

When phones got bigger and laptops got ultra portable, I feel like a tablet is neither here nor there. Ours felt very slow after only 3-4 years, which seemed like a bit of a rip off for the money.
But imho it's just about consumption vs creation. If I'm browsing a bit or watch some videos, I find the phone plenty. If I want to type an email or something I usually grab the laptop.

Isn't an iPad Pro as dear as a MacBook Air? Besides the screen, I'd have the Air every day of the week.
An iPad Pro is better, if you don’t need a keyboard, than a bottom spec air and £200 less.

I always used my laptop when away from home for general email stuff, browsing, tv that type of thing. An iPad is so much easier, it’s lighter, it does not need another charger, it’s smaller, it does exactly what I want to entertain me when staying in a hotel. Tbh I can’t see me ever getting another laptop.
The pro is so fast and nice to use, I was in 2 minds if it was worth the premium over the standard iPad, so glad I went for the pro.

Sent from iPad.

I'm thinking of trading my 2013 Retina MBP in for an iPad pro. Does the pro have a folder structure capability like an MBP or is it more like a regular iPad with just apps etc?
