It’s been a long time since I used Apple maps and when I did, I was disappointed and soon reverted back to Google Maps.

I do 30k miles a year and want GOOD real time traffic data (and I really dislike the interface of Waze). I have an iPhone and using Google Maps on the phone has been no issue.

However I’m just about to get a car with CarPlay and that will only show Apple Maps on the car screen.

Will I be disappointed with the traffic/re-routing of Apple Maps or has it improved to the levels of Google?

Alternatively I can just get a phone holder and use the phone screen to show Google Maps and not use Carplay at all.

Thanks in advance.

Apple maps is not even close to google maps for traffic. It’s not the same sport let alone ball park.

The only exposure I have to apple maps is when our rental in Montreal last year came with car play and we used it to get us from the airport out 50+ miles to our resort during evening rush hour. I was very impressed (having dismissed apple maps at launch); traffic seemed to update in real time (got quite a few prompts to adjust our route based on traffic volume) and I really couldn't fault it.

Haven't used it back here in the UK though, so not sure if you get the same level of coverage as you do in North America.

In Northern America Apple maps is awesome, anywhere else it’s gash.

You probably already know google maps traffic is crowd sourced from Waze so it’s essentially a different interface with lane guidance etc,..

Apple maps is a huge let down imho in the UK

I find the Apple Maps does quite well. Not used google so cannot compare, never will either.

However I tried a paid sat nav app and paid the extra for live traffic. It was terrible, Apple was better than it and Apple is a bit basic but live traffic is from one of the big boys I think.

I’ve switched to Apple maps, from google maps, having dismissed it pretty quickly when it launched.

Worth a try I think.

Not really used Apple maps....but Waze beat Google maps hands down recently when the M25 was shut, Uxbridge jammed and a bunch of us (3 cars) needed to get to a hotel!

Did a good job this morning too, when the M1 southbound was closed (around 5/6am!).

I might become a convert!

I find Apple Maps better than Google for everything bar Points Of Interest. There, I said it.

At least Apple Maps manages to get UK motorways the correct colour, something that google broke a few years back.

Apple Maps on CarPlay works well.

Apple maps - search sucks and traffic not as good

Waze - adverts on the screen and takes you through way too many long winded rat runs that save you like 4 seconds

Google - my current fave, search is awesome, traffic is good

Is there anyway to have speed camera locations on Google Maps? That's all that is keeping me using Tomtom

Apple Maps (and siri generally) is so bad that when I get a new head unit last year I swapped to an Andriod phone.

Android Auto & Google Maps is so much better than CarPlay and Apple Maps.

Does Apple allow different mapping apps on CP yet?

Use the dedicated TomTom speed camera app and you can set it to overlay speed limits, current speed and camera warnings on top of Google Maps. I'm using this setup on Android and it works well - can't comment on iPhone.

No. Although I have heard that you can run Waze in the background and have audio alerts for cameras etc. but have the car screen show Apple maps.

This is good for Android when using the phone screen only. Won’t work for Android Auto. Won’t work at all for iPhones as they don’t have the app available.
