After a bit of help.

We have Sky broadband, using the Sky Q Hub Router thing, that does wifi around the house, however, this router is notorious for bad signal over wifi and constant drop outs, which mean disconnecting the device from wifi and reconnecting everytime.

I have heard you can't actually replace the main router as Sky won't let you, but you can put another wifi router on it to act as the wifi, with the original Sky router as just the internet link.

Can anyone advise me what I need to buy, and how to set it up. I am fairly technical, but am a complete loss with this!

The main issue is the Sonos losing signal, which is in the kitchen. I am told that a power line type connection will also help this. Maybe I need one of those too?

I cannot move the original router from the area it is in, and the house is new build, so it's not like there are huge brick walls in the way!

Has anyone done this? can anyone advise?

Much appreciated!

I can't help with a solution, except to say that I work at home regularly and the software/connections I use are very sensitive to dropouts - i've not experienced a single dropout since Sky Fibre was installed a month ago.

I'd be checking for clashes on the wifi channel you are using, or issues with the distance between the router and other devices before replacing the router and potentially still having the same issue.

I often here people say "routers supplied by <insert isp here> are rubbish", but for 99% of people they are just fine.

Depends how invested in the Sky Q system you are, but if it's just the main router then I would disable the Wi-Fi on that and use a BT wholehome mesh system instead. New builds usually mean plasterboard walls, so signal shouldn't be a problem.

Yes, I've done it, i'm on 40/10 fibre package dumped the Q router and bought a TPlink vr900 https://www.tp-link.com/uk/products/details/cat-15...
Select sky setting in the router on initial setup, In the username field, enter abcdefgh@skydsl
In the password field, enter 1234567890abcdef

Works way better than Q router on wifi.

Possibly Asus router would be another one to look out for.

Also could just by an rj11 extension cable plug into bt faceplate and back of router and move router to somewhere with better coverage, I moved mine on a 20 meter cable to middle of house and signal/noise loss was imperceptible. Obviously need a power point.

I did exactly the same, even the same router.

Very easy to set up and my phone and tablet no longer drop out when I go to my kitchen.

New builds are actually often the worst
foil lined insulation which is pretty much standard mean that to wifi new houses are like a hall of mirrors signals bouncing all over the place.

That sounds excellent. So does the vr900 replace the sky one completely? Or is it linked to it acting as a WiFi thing only?

And is it as easy as entering those generic username and password. I thought it was nearly impossible to not use the original sky one?

Also I’d have thought that new builds were better for WiFi due to thin walls. Didn’t think about the insulation properties.

Sky Q routers are notoriously bad for their WiFi. Of course sky deny this.

It replaces it completely. Cable from the phone socket directly into the new router. Apparently Sky started using a generic user name and password with fibre.

The information online isn't great, its either very old or very techie, flashing new firmware onto routers etc..

Yes replaces Q router completely, one really small caveat Sky Routers usually use a 192.168.0.1 gateway whereas tplink are default on the 192.168.1.1 subnet. May have to configure some equipment that is/was set with static addresses, can easily put the tplink on the 192.168.0.1 /24 within the router settings.

Right, I am going to get one ordered today (vr900)

Thank you all for your help, however, I dare say I will be back asking/pleading for help with the initial setup!

Wish me luck.....

OP, did you successfully get the new router up and running ok?

Only enquiring, as I am experiencing the same problems...

Yes I did. Was surprisingly easy actually.

There were a couple of options in the set up for "Sky" first one did nothing, second one I chose seem to work fine.

It is so much better than the old. Connectivity is excellent, and the internet does not seem to slow down like on the old Sky Q Hub. I would highly recommend.

The username and password provided kindly by another poster above was what worked for me.

Ordered a few days ago and arrived today. Pleased to report that following the advice on here, all is now set up good & I now have a strong Wi-Fi signal in all bedrooms and around the rest of the house without having to resort to repeaters.

The only problems I encountered was to reset Hive and the NAS but all good now.

Thanks everyone, a very simple solution.

Just picked up on this old thread.

I've just got Sky Fibre, and tried to connect my Router. Was easy to do following the instructions mentioned earlier, however I cant get IPv6 to work.

I have a TD-W9970 router, and can only get 45meg speeds, if I plug in the sky hub I get 60meg. I assume this might be something to do with IPv6 not connecting.

On your routers under status, for IPv6 does it say "connected" or "Connecting"?

Your speed has nothing to do with you using or not using IPv6. It can be a bit more complicated setting up IPv6 on internal networks and is much higher risk of an insecure configuration if you do not know what your doing. I would say stay away from IPv6 if it doesn't work out of the box.

Yes ipv6 does say connected on mine.

Check your Firmware Version first :0.1.0 0.9.1 v0069.0 Build 160721 Rel.66177n Hardware Version:Archer VR900 v2 00000000 you may need to update

These are some of my settings, i did not have ipv6 enabled, but did enable to prove it works for me/you.
Saying that it will not speed up the connection. You could try another rj11 cable to the router and phone socket. Also it may take a while for your new router to sync and negotiate with Sky's dslam to find the correct speed and become stable so it may ramp up after a few days.

My basic settings are below:

On tp router click on network advanced tab, then Network on left hand side then scroll down & click on DSL Settings they should be:

DSL Modulation Type:Auto Sync-up
Annex Type:Annex A/L/M
Bit Swap: Enable
SRA: Enable

if correct then scroll back up to Internet then click modify on right hand side which brings up Wan interface ipoe_ptm_101_1_d vpi/vci or vcd = 101 Status connected
Internet Connection Setup
DSL Modulation Type: VDSL
VLAN ID: 101
Connection Type: Dynamic IP
IPv4: Enable (ticked)
IP Address: (whatever ip address sky gives you)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.252.0
Gateway: (whatever ip address sky gives you)
Default Gateway:ipoe_ptm_101_1_d
IPv6: Enable (ticked)
IPv6 Address: ::
Prefix Length: 0
IPv6 Gateway: (whatever ip address sky gives you)
Addressing Type:DHCPv6
IPv6 Gateway:ipoe_ptm_101_1_d

Click on
Advanced
MTU Size(in bytes):
1500
(1500 by default, do not change unless necessary)
NAT: Enable
Full-cone NAT: Enable
SPI Firewall: Enable
IGMP Proxy: Enable
Get IP using Unicast DHCP: (It is usually not required.)
Use the following DNS Addresses: Enable
Use the following IPv6 DNS Address: Enable
Host Name:

Would someone mind helping me out with the setup of my new VR900 router to replace my SkyQ hub/router.

So I am 99% setup except my SkyQ main box will not connect to the internet or router. All my other laptops and devices are working on the wifi all fine.

I've unplugged all my extra SkyQ mini boxes (I don't want to turn them back on until I get the main box working) and I've tried holding the WPS buttons on both the SkyQ main box and the router but still no joy.

What do i need to enable to get the two to talk?

Cheers
