Any particular requirements?

The Nokia 5.1 is £150 and has been getting good reviews.

I don't think there are many - I think the main requirement is, one that's not going to run out of memory in the short to medium term (so I think at least 32GB, ideally 64).

Memory or storage?

Most Android phones still let you bung a memory card in, so none of the Apple storage rip offs to worry about.

I've got a Moto G5+ which is great, and was around the £200 mark iirc. The G6+ gets good reviews as well.

I'm very impressed with my Honor 9, which was c £250-£270, but I understand is due to be replaced soon so you may get it a good deal cheaper and c £200 if you shop around.

I've got a Moto G6+ which was a bit more than the budget but they do some other good models around that figure.

Can I jump on this as well as in same situation as OP? My only "must have" requirement is NFC, and hopefully as good/better than my current Wileyfox Swift 2X

I picked up one of those from John Lewis for £159.00. A sublime phone, but it's never been that cheap again since.

Worth every penny of £250.00 if the budget can be stretched.

Another vote for the Nokia 6.1, I bought one about a month ago and have been very happy with it.

OP - will you want to use Android auto? If so, avoid Huawei or Honor phones as they have a compatability issue. I had to get the Nokia to replace a Huawei P20 lite which was great but didn't work with Android auto.

Just out of interest, does anyone have a phone at this price point and also a £700+ flagship type phone to do a comparison report? I just can't see how the extra cost can be justified!

My colleague has a Pixel 2 XL. It recently cost him ~£280 to replace the screen and glass back, having dropped it about two weeks into ownership.

He has commented more than once that he should have bought a Nokia like mine.

The Nokia phones with Android One are getting regular AndroidOS updates, so planned obsolescence is less of an issue than with most other brands. Mine is running Android 9 already.
Wileyfox have also been good about pushing out OS updates, though I think their phones are now firmly at the budget end of the market and coming to the end of their life.

My colleague with Pixel 2 XL has an older phone, has compared with mine, and thinks the extra cost is not justified.

My son has a Moto G6 Play and I have an iPhone XS. Ignoring the Android/iOS differences which blurs it a bit, the XS is head and shoulders above the G6 in my opinion.

I didn't believe the OLED hype until I got one and it's hard to quantify but the OLED just has "something" that makes it so much better. Clearer, better colours, brightness and contrast. The XS was a replacement for an iPhone SE and I'd say the G6 screen is comparable to that in terms of clarity. The SE is hardly current tech. The screen is what made me buy the XS over the XR which I waited to see in my hand.

The G6 plastic back feels cheap and the buttons feel more flimsy. The lack of weight also adds to the "cheap" feel. The glass/metal combination of the XS feels nicer in the hand. I expect the flagship Android phones will also have a similar feel with similar materials and OLED screens.

The XS seems a lot more fluid in use. How much of that is the phone and how much is down to Android/iOS I don't know but expect it's a bit of both, the G6 Play is not exactly top spec. I prefer the way iOS does things so it feels more "natural" to me, others feel the exact opposite.

I don't use phone cameras a lot, I prefer a "proper" camera but, if you do, you will get a better camera with the more expensive phones. Between the XS and the G6 it is a noticeable difference.

Is the XS (or the Pixel 3, S9, Mate 20 Pro and so on) "worth" the extra? Probably not. Is a BMW "worth" more than a Kia? They have most of the same things and perform the same tasks and both are perfectly competent. Would I buy a Kia? No. Do millions of others and are they perfectly happy with them? Yes.

Would I be happy with the G6 Play, no not really. Is my son happy with his? Yes.

Can I justify the extra cost of my BMW, yes, to myself and that's the only person that matters. Same goes for the phone.

With the iPhone XS being 770% more expensive than the Moto G6 Play with an an £870 difference in price I would expect it to be more than "head and shoulders above" but in the next galaxy.
