Folks,

I need a new phone. Current Android handset dying on its feet. I don’t want to spend more than £200ish if possible.

I’ve seen a few graded S7s around this price point. Are they still decent? I have one for work and really like it but not sure if they slow down as badly as older iPhones...

I’d love something like an iPhone but just can’t justify spending over £500 on a bloody phone!

Mainly want it for a few happy snaps, Spotify and things like that.

I might be tempted to let my S8+ go for not much more than that as quite fancy a OnePlus 6T.

And my immaculate 128GB iPhone 7 for that matter... smile

Bought one for my wife's birthday. She loves the camera and the fact that it's dual SIM, but the fingerprint sensor rarely works. The fact that she can unlock it by saying 'Hey Google' almost makes up for that smile

And I find it easier to hold than my S9, and because it has a bit of a bezel, you're less likely to accidentally launch an app when picking it up.

They are okay. Not the most robust thing on earth - the glass back cracked in my back pocket. So I put a case on it. It still cracked the screen pretty terminally when I dropped it.

Lots of Samsung software you can't get rid of too. And Facebook.

My S7 isn't dual SIM?!

I've got the s7 edge, had it 2 years and it's still going ok.

My only real complaint is that they are prone to screen burn...mine has the keyboard and the icons at the top of the screen burnt into the display a-la an old plasma tv...its only noticeable on white backgrounds mostly though.

I’ve got a dual SIM S7, I think they are very common outside of the UK (and very handy if you travel regularly).

I love it, it’s still got excellent battery life, hasn’t slowed noticeably and, as stated above, has an excellent camera. I’ll not be replacing it until it dies.

Yep no issue with the performance of mine, still feels pretty spritely.

I would however concur on the fragility of the screen - I've never so much as scratched a screen before, but in the 12 months I've had my S7 I've had to replace both the screen and the rear glass.

Upgraded from an S6 to S7 edge and I will swear that the camera isn't so good but at least you can use an extra memory card for storage and the phone is quite fast as well.

S7 is over 2 years old, it received final system update and most likely will be EOS soon (if it's not already). In this day and age using an unpatched/unupdated smartphone is like having unprotected sex with crack cocaine hooker three times a day. Do you really want to risk it?

Why don’t you get a refurbished iPhone 6 or 7?

Whilst it might get a bit slower as it gets older, it will work in 3 years time. If anything I would say Samsung phones are much worse than iPhones for slowing down as they get older. My S8 felt like a 4 or 5 year old iPhone after an update at 9 months old.

My mum still uses my old iPhone 5, it’s only 6 years old

What makes you think its had its final update? Especially with people keeping their phones longer, Samsung would get terrible press if they stopped issuing critical and security updates for a £600 phone after only 2 years.

Mine is 2 years old, and will be switching to a SIM only plan next month. Phone is still quick, plenty of storage. Fit a good case though, the glass back is not durable if dropped onto a hard surface.

It's not like there's not enough data to show a trend and it's not like Samsung haven't got a history to back this up.

Also only pure android phones (the android one programme) and Pixels are guaranteed to get 2 years of updates + 1 year of security patches = 3 years support FROM the launch of each phone (and minimum 18 months from the time a specific model was available for sale in the official channels).

Have an S7 edge dual sim and there is still absolutely no need to change it whatsoever. Works great & still really happy with it. Paid £440 2 years ago. Got the lad a refurb S7 for about £200 recently. Again works great. Get a case!

Its very easy to pay so much more especially with that loaded US manufacturer!

If you get an used one make sure they sign out of Google before they wipe it - otherwise you wont get in as its encrypted at boot.

I've not heard of anyone having security problems with their phones, it's a theoretical risk rather than an actual one really isn't it.
I am aware many iPhone owners had their iTunes accounts hacked and their photos stolen....but they were generally celebrities with poor passwords weren't they ?

This should 100% be Apple's new marketing campaign.

I too have the S7Edge Duos (dual SIM) and I've no thoughts of changing yet as the current models won't allow simultaneous support for both sims and memory with the factory ROM. It's also still on the list of supported monthly security patches too after which I guess it will be downgraded to quarterly ones like other models.

I thought I didn't need dual sim. Then we went to asia for a month and used my wife's Moto G instead of my S8 hehe

Iirc it wasn't one big hack, most of the "hacking" was done by social engineering (which is extremely targeted) and could indeed have been avoided by two factor authentication or even a better security policy.

In any case, most (not all) of their phones were fairly recent iPhones so the update argument shouldn't hold anyway.

I echo the sentiment above, unless you're handling extremely sensitive or valuable information, I don't see it as an issue. The user is going to be the weakest link in security anyway.
That's why I always film my sexual encounters with movie stars with an old camcorder.
