Ethernet cable arrived. A hardwired test plugged into the router gave the following;
Ping 14 Download 79.95 Upload 92.46
This is on Voda 900 and is via ethernet to the router. Shocking. I have raised a formal complaint with Voda.
What units are those speeds? Megabytes/second or Megabits/second?Ping 14 Download 79.95 Upload 92.46

When connecting the device to the router via cable, what speed was the Ethernet port reporting it's connected at?

What ethernet cable did you buy? Cat 5 is limited to 100Mb, Cat 5e goes to gigabit
5 is not certified beyond 100mb, but will typically handle gigabit speeds with no issues. The router can't tell what kind of cable you're using...Is the Linksys Vodafone-supplied? I assume it's directly connected to the ONT, rather than through another unit.
Some routers can run a speed test internally via the web UI. Worth seeing what that gives.

No the Linksys isnt Voda supplied. The Voda router was dreadful on wifi so I bought the linksys atlas pro 6 ax5400
Vodafone may ask you to test with their router, which is annoying. You should be able to just disable WiFi in theirs and use the Linksys purely as a WiFi system though.What external infrastructure is there an end-user can check on a FTTP service? I'd also expect Openreach to bounce any contact straight to Vodafone as the service provider.
OP - can you confirm the Ethernet port speed reported on the PC / laptop used for the direct router speed test? The speeds quoted above (Download 79.95 Upload 92.46) could indicate a 100Mbps connection if they are Megabits but on the other hand, if that's Megabytes/second, then that equates to 739 Megabits/second so closer to the 900Mbps advertised speed.
Likewise, do any of the routers you have report the speed of the router WAN port to be 1Gbps (or higher)?

So what wired speed do you get with the Voda router ?Blown2CV said:

he's getting the same results for both routers, virtually.
I read it as he's disconnected the Vodafone one and put the Linksys in it's place, but could also be read as it's switched the voda's wifi off and plugged the linksys in to the voda and using the linksys for wifi, which I assume is how you're interpreting it?If the latter then it's worth checking that either the Voda is in passthrough mode, or the Linksys is in access point mode. If they're both trying to act as routers its "double NATing" which might mean it's slowing things down.

Vodafone CEO office called me back, the tests they have carried out show an issue at the ONT which is likely why the speed is slow. Frustratingly they have asked me to reboot the router tonight, leave it an hour, then carry out a speed test.
I explained I have already tried rebooting the router but they insist I do it again before moving to other potential options tomorrow. At least they acknowledge a fault.
