I my world the inconvenience of cables is a (or more precisely sh*te battery life and poor sound quality) deal breaker.

Neckband ones offer a reasonable compromise, but still a bit battery life limited

My current fully wireless ones have a 10hr battery life and can be recharged twice out of the case for a 30hr total.

A significant improvement over the last pair. I would say the sound quality is good too, and I have owned a couple of pairs of very well praised headphones and ear buds.

I said it on another thread recently but I would not touch those Sony's or Sennheiser's for anything like the money they are asking for them simply because the technology is still developing at a pace that in a year they will be obsolete.

The AirPods got a lot right, particularly the size of the charge case, the microphone and at least they won't be replaced every 5 minutes.
but that is still downtime, whether thats every 6hrs or every 10 hrs.
I have my wired ones often for 10-12 hrs a day, either listening to music or on skype/teams calls.

To a certain extent its a moot argument as I cannot wear in ears anyway, but the same applies to headphones, although these are a lot better these days and are broadly now good enough for a full day.

I've got way too much invested in headphones to start changing now, probably in the region of £12-1500 in various combinations of pure headphones, in line mic, noise cancelling, bluetooth (yes I succumbed to £300 pair of portables and never use em cos they only last 8 hrs). Currently seriously looking at Beyerdynamics T5p as my portable pair, but probably need to get rid of some of the others to finance a change like that.

At a desk? I use wired ones at work but for general use there is just no way, if I am in the gym, cycling, at home etc there is just no competition. Sat at a desk you are already tethered to some extent so it makes less difference.

Over ears last a long time now - 30 hours or more.

Look at the plus side... you can now buy her some good headphones with a cable that are 1/3rd the price of the airpods. :-)
Will she also need to buy a phone with a 3.5mm jack? wink
If you buy an iPhone that doesn't have a 3.5mm jack you get an adapter with it.

I did pick up a set of Sony WF-1000XM3 noise-cancelling earbuds

Pro’s:
- decent sound quality (my daily cans are Audeze electrostatics so that’s my benchmark)
- effective noise cancelling when you manage to get into the right mode
- selection of earbud sizes
- left and right colour-coded

Con’s:
- family verdict is they make me look like an Uber driver - the AirPod look is now apparently considered normal
- terrible ergonomics and controls compared with Apple. Just getting a new device paired is frustrating
- no wireless charging, just a 4 inch USB to USB-C cable
- drop-outs when using the controls
- large charging case

So better than Apple EarPods for sound quality but worse for practicality and integration with iPhone

I reckon I’ll carry both around

Forgot about this thread.

As predicted I lost my airpods to the daughter.

Then she found hers in the bottom of her school back.

I hated on AirPods until I got bought some, use them multiple times a day now.

Surprised I haven't lost them in 18 months, but I have got better at making sure I put them in the case as soon as I've finished with them and putting that case somewhere sensible.

The little pocket on a pair of jeans is perfect for them.

Let us know how you get on, I’m considering these.

That said, a colleague has a pair of the old version. They have a very noticeable blue LED which appear to flash constantly in use. They have the effect of making him look like an airliner doing its final go-around. Not sure I could live with it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not wanting to make a fashion statement- but I don’t want them to be unnecessarily conspicuous. Doubly so because they are £230.
If they have a blue flashing light, they aren’t real AirPods, they’ll be fake ones from eBay/Amazon

I think Russell was referring to the Sony wireless buds, not AirPods. Btw they only flash blue for 5 secs when you first connect/pair them.

Give it a couple of years, then Apple will invent some special "tethers" to attach your AirPods to your iPhone, then decide to run the audio and the power from the phone to the AirPods via said tethers, so the AirPods don't need their own batteries. Then there'll be a big ad campaign like they just invented the wheel.
