Looks like the BBC are pulling the plug on Tunein on a range of devices.

I think Sonos will be ok but many others like Denon Heos, marantz, B and O, NAD will be screwed
Those with Amazon Alexa units will need to load the BBC skill, if you use a phone you will need another app

Details are here
https://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/aboutthebbc/entries/37...

Changes happen on 30/8/19

The crazy thing is it seems to affect UK users only? So it must be some licencing bks rather than a technical/ obsolescence issue. ETA its because Tune in wont share data

Thanks Auntie
Time to blow the dust off the DAB radio again rolleyes

One day the BBC think inventing their own smart speaker is a good idea, the next they are removing support for probably millions of devices, with little notice or notification. The reason seems to be they want more date on what’s being listened to. Err poor decision making, and really not serving the best interests of license fee payers. Almost like the BBC are looking for ways to ps off the public.

Or Tunein wanting to ps off their app users.

Why is it unreasonable for the BBC to want to know which BBC shows people are listening to?

Why would TuneIn want to piss of thier users? They are a commercial organisation and need users to survive. The BBC do not.
I would expect the BBC will still know how many and which shows are being listened to, just not who by.
BBC online services are over personalised, insisting on logins for iPlayer (when there is no value to the user) and prompting constantly for logins to thier web sites. There really is no need. To pull the plug with little notice is heavy handed, and will affect many people who will blame the BBC, whether that is fair or not.

If you log in on the iplayer app it has your listening history and half completed shows, you can follow favourite shows, download to listen on aeroplanes or trains with patchy signal.

I like iplayer

And I am sure the BBC will be sad to see you go.

Oh and do make sure you stock up on some more tin foil for your hat when you go shopping (whilst wearing your balaclava and paying with cash).

This does sound like a spat between the BBC and TuneIn more than anything else.

You said in an earlier post that this is: 'really not serving the best interests of license fee payers'. However, to listen to BBC radio content does not require the payment of a TV licence fee.

The money TV licence fee payers hand over goes to the government who then funds the BBC from it. At the moment, things like online or radio content generally don't require a TV licence, so anyone could access those for free, although my TV licence money is helping fund their production. So, as a TV licence fee payer, my best interests aren't affected. If I was a TuneIn user though, then I could see that my personal interests could be worse off.

The strong swing from broadcast to streaming over the last few years means that the UK TV licence model is fast becoming untenable and thus the funding of the BBC will have to change at some point. If it heads towards advertising or subscription (which a lot of competitors use), then a lot more people will be pee'd off! And there will also be the associated regional licensing/copyright issues of accessing online content.

Pretty much the only thing I listen to is the Today programme, and it's fast becoming irrelevant in today's world.

I don't have an Alexa. Instead I have chosen to go the Google assistant path and have a variety of google assistant enabled devices.
I just checked and it says " alright here is BBC Radio 1 on the BBC"
So I assume that google give the BBBC my details and say that
"techiedave@dianneandemilyslovenest.co.uk" just listened to Radio 1 ?

I have to say well done to the Op for posting this up as I can imagine a few people will have been taken short by it.

Thanks for that.... I wasn't aware of the app. Just installed it and on Sonos too.

Having said that, it's Sept 7th and TuneIn is still working fine.

If you read my original post I have put a link to the BBC detailing the changes.
Judging by the comments on the BBC blog implementation is patchy.

I have simply put the post up to make people aware of the the BBCs intention.
I was made aware of these changes as a result of a technical bulletin issued by an equipment manufacturer, and thought I'd pass the info on as it has not been very widely publicised.
I thought it may be useful to pass the info on.
