New DJI Mavic Mini
Discussion
I took out my Mavic Mini today for the first time, shot a couple of videos of the first flights.
https://youtu.be/8vJlrNN0zhI - This is the first flight, camera work is pretty jerky but to be honest I was just concentrating on not crashing or losing the bloody thing!
https://youtu.be/N_dgV5YW7YU - Second flight, not much in it really, just a nice little pan around our cars on the way out to a meet this morning.
I have to say I'm very impressed with the performance of this little drone, I have nothing to compare it to as it's my first one but so far it's exceeded my expectations, the video quality is excellent (not sure how much YouTube will compromise this) and the controls and app are very intuitive.
from me!

Great fun arent they shady?
Had a bit of a scare with mine this afternoon. I put it up in the air to get a sunset photo from my back garden (which I missed anyway). At about 100m I tried to move it around and it just lost connection completely, I couldn't hear it.... no signal.... no visual (oops). We are in a fairly busy residential area, so there must be tons of wifi noise. Fortunately, if the drone loses connection with the remote then the Return to Home function kicks in. About 30 seconds later It was floating back down but had shifted about 10meters backwards.
Anyway.. just worth remembering to make sure your RTH location and return height is set before you fly the drone out of sight.

Price range it's brilliant, I think it's a master stroke by DJI as it gives you an idea what the Mavic 2 is like. And I reckon in a short time people will be selling the mini for a 2. It is beyond a doubt the best single thing I've bought since my 70-200 L lens.
Mini wouldn't work for me photographically, but it will be enough for people to have a go and then ponder buying the 2 for proper photography.

In the UK we have to abide by lower output power which is 10mW on 2.4 and and 25mW on 5gigs.
I think in the USA they have a limit of 1000mW, I forget their exact numbers though. I doubt the US version is putting out that kind of power but maybe 200mW or something? Someone will know the exact specs.
Disclaimer - Its been a good few years since I was into FPV so the numbers might have changed.
So we get the "CE" version whilst the USA get "FCC" version.
Range tests are slowly appearing now and it looks like out of the box the CE version is good to around 1500m. That's a long, long way and no way you would remain in LOS at that distance. My worry was in noisy environments that might drop to 200m but so far its looking like DJI have done a good job.

Wow thanks for that explanation, I was under the impression the CE version couldn't go any further than 500m, but after viewing YouTube videos it seems not, sure I'll find out soon enough my first real drone, my last one was a cheap one from a gadget shop and it just did what it wanted after about 100m, is there a drone regs guide for a user I don't want to be breaking any laws I think in the USA they have a limit of 1000mW, I forget their exact numbers though. AFAIK there are hard limits in the CE version s/w, I think its mainly altitude though I think its 1200ft AGL. Distance I think is unlimited but the user can dial this down as they see fit.
Google drone code for info on laws.
DJI help part of the way with on screen notifications about airspace but should not be 100% relied upon.
