We have Sky Q and due to the fact the house is old and long and built of stone we had Sky Q Cat5 cabled (installed by Sky) between the front of the house and the back of the house. The cable runs from the main Sky Q box to the Mini Box at the back of the house.

I am wondered if it is possible to add a PoE Network Switch to the Sky Q cable in order to run a second ethernet cable to the garden?

Has anyone tried this? Would it work? My main concern is that the Cat 5 cable runs from the Sky box rather than the Sky internet router.

Is the sky router at the main box end?

You should be fine as long as you can get a cable from the router to the main box (might need a 2nd switch at that end)

Sky q main box to router
Cat5 from router to the back of the house
Small switch at the back of the house
2nd sky box into the new switch

Sorted.

Great, will give that a go. Will need a switch at main box end as ran out of ports (apple TV and Hive Hub) plugged into the 2 ports on router.

Yes, this is what I do. Sky don't officially support it as they just install point to point from Mainbox to mini but it's been working fine for us for years.

SkyQ mainbox> 8 port Netgear 1gb switch>broadband router (Xbox, PS4, Smart TV for Netflix as it's faster than the Sky Q version so we needed lots of ports that we didn't have)

Then cat5e from switch by the mainbox> outside the house (Sky did this like yours) > 1gb switch at the back of the house>SkyQ minibox

Cat5 from switch to other devices.
