I've been looking for a cheap action cam on Amazon, and there seem to be a ton of GoPro lookalikes at a fraction of the cost of a real GoPro.

I guess I'm looking for some personal recommendations and experiences - does anyone have one they'd recommend? I'm always a bit wary of Amazon reviews for this kind of thing.

You can get cheap clones but they are invariably a shaky mess if you try and use them as an action cam due to the lack of image stabilisation, there are some decent clones but they start at around £60

Best bet if you do decide to get a cheap one is to look on youtube for some comparison footage, I use a gopro clone on my quadcoptor as gopro stopped making the session line and it's pretty similar performance wise.

Depends how cheap and cheerful you need to be! I recently got an Akaso Brave 6 Plus, I think it was £94 (Amazon voucher code offer). It had all the features I needed and got decent reviews, I'm happy with it so far.

Apeman A87 works well for me although beekeeping is hardly an 'extreme' test for it!

Edit: Will be replacing my iphone 7 with a 12 Pro Max in a couple of and I'm convinced that'll blow GoPro away!

Honestly if you want a cheap and cheerful GoPro clone, just by the cheap and cheerful GoPro.

I still use a GoPro Hero 5 for track days, I paid £60 for it because the rear LCD screen doesn't work but touch and all functionality still works, have been using it now for a few years.

Just remeber the fact that a camera records in 1080p or 4k doesn't mean the image quality is good (just big). I see too many cheap clones/alternatives that end up looking like dash cameras.

You can get a brand new GoPro Hero 7 for £250. Hero 6 is going for around £200 on eBay, Hero 5 is around £100.

I have two, both cost under £100 and both have image stabilisation. The first I bought was an Akaso EK7000 Pro which I've used extensively in car and which gives very good results though I managed to crack its mount which vibrated and could be heard on the soundtrack - my fault for being clumsy.

I've just bought a Crosstour CT9900. It has an external mic option and also has a built in tripod thread, both features I was after. I haven't used it yet so can't comment on video or sound quality.

Have a look at dashcam talk forum, they have a good section with reviews.
Also check out "The everyday Dad" on YouTube, he has a special section of videos, which review the cheapest of action cameras (plus some other great reviews)
