I still can’t work out if they’d be a good dog tracker - I presume that if someone found the dog that has escaped/run off - if they chucked the tag, you’d be stuffed but…
It would give u the last position?
Would you be able to follow the signal as the dog was running around the local area?
It will give you the last position it was seen by an Iphone. It would give u the last position?

As said, if nobody was near your dog with an iPhone the tracker wouldn’t really do anything.
Better than nothing though and seems like there’s plenty of neat solutions for mounting one to a collar just incase you ever needed it.
Much like most of the tracking these are used for I expect.

I bought 4 with out doing much research and I think it may have been a mistake. The plan was to have one in my car, wife's car and one in each of the kids bags. I did not intend tracking the kids with them, just the bags as they have a habit of leaving them places. I also wanted to drop them in suit cases when traveling.
All sounds reasonable.....
But, as I can only connect them to my phone, if I travel with business then they will all get sad and start screaming until I get home. If I leave one in my car at the airport, it will do the same. Even if I leave the car at home and I am away for more than 3 days, it will assume it is stolen and start crying! I had hoped they would be attach and forget but now I have to nurse the needy fkers.
What about the kids bags? They will be home with me each day when not traveling so the need for attention alarm will not go off. Ahhhh, but, the "h0b0's kids, dad is a nasty stalking rapist" alarm will because the teachers will be getting alerts.
How did such a simple idea get so useless?

Oh. Erm. That’s kinda embarrassing. For Apple..Apples press release
They are not meant for tracking people, but are for tracking objects. Apple have used the terms locating and tracking interchangeably. They have said they are not to be used for kids and pets due to the need for signal meaning they can’t be relied on.

There’s very little out there in the way of real time GPS tracking. What is out there is very expensive- I guess these would be better than nothing.
Vodafone Curve.Works off GPS and transmits it’s position over the Vodaphone network.
Costs £20 with £2 per month subscription.
However I think different devices suit different objects / scenarios. Maybe a Tile Pro is better for finding your bunch of keys or wallet down the sofa. And the Vodafone Curve is better for your dog. I saw a YouTube video where some guy successfully tracked parcels he posted worldwide using Apples Airtag, as they went through different depots, sorting offices and airports. For a car, the biggest problem is battery life, you’re probably better with a hardwired tracker like a ScorpionTrack S5

For anyone that has one, does it work at all without a subscription? Just wondering if it worked on Bluetooth only unless you subscribe?

I put an air tag inside my suitcase and it shows perfectly when it arrives at the aircraft and where it is in the airport.
That would have saved me a lot of angst when my bag went missing off the carousel when transiting through Chicago. It turned up at the next airport but it would have been much better if I'd known that was going to happen instead of thinking someone had taken it home.Sheepshanks said:

I just put it inside the Samsonite hard suitcase and it seems to work ok.
Stupid things have been around for at least 3-4 years. The websites make all sort of claims of accurate tracking but to be honest they rely on strangers allowing their mobile data to be used left right and center, and its an approximation on bluetooth distance.
GPS trackers are now small enough and don't spam eveyones data around. So I went with that for the cars.
I do feel a lot safer though knowing bluetooth radiated signals are all over the plane when people stick them in airplane luggage

Just the £249 (but that does include the AirTag) !
The Mrs has a Hermes S6 watch and I had the S3 version - people joke at the prices but the leather accoutrements are of wonderful quality and it also happens to perfectly match the Mrs’ other Hermes accessories, bags and jewellery.https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/MX842ZM/A/ai...

Works perfectly, different modes, can do real-time tracking but that munches the battery life. Much larger than an airtag, does not successfully work on the dog’s collar, as it rapidly gets into it’s mouth and chewed. Have inelegantly duck taped to the top of his harness. Can’t find a mountable holder for it and don’t have a 3D printer (have found files for one online).
Pretty sure that it is useless without a subscription. Seems to want to add the charge to your mobile’s month account, which was a pain for me having a corporate phone, used another member of the family’s phone to setup, then shared access. Yes can have multiple users unlike airtag.
Charger it up every couple of nights, unless we have been using real-time tracking, then every night.
Not going to deter a thief, but might help me find the puppy if it does a runner
