Well, so much for all that money spent on hardware & software upgrades!

I'd still rather use a Mac, my Win10 work laptop is a right PITA.

I got my laptop with Windows 8 with a free upgrade to 10 on release back then... I might be wrong, but when a new version of Windows came out it was never a good idea to go with it straight away (lots of bugs in it.... allegedly!)

Windows 11 or Windows Sun Valley are the possible names.
New name(s) same old bloat and spyware, and the good old updates and fixes every few days.

Beginning to look a lot like Linux biggrin

That it might be, my Win10 laptop did a load of updates and deleted or reset the power settings so it ends up sleeping and you can't bring it out of sleep forcing a reboot.

It is this sort of behaviour that a) pisses me off and causes problems b) haven't had this with
Apple so it less about the actual OS but the peripheral issues causing user problems and annoyance.

Win 10 may be the best OS MS has ever put out, but Mac OS is still ahead in terms of stability and usability. My Win 10 work laptop will crash / freeze / have applications stop responding several times a week. Finding settings takes ages (but I’m more of a Mac user). By contrast, my Macs just work, faultlessly, all the time.

And I still dread Windows Patch Days!

The Windows vs Apple argument is a bit unfair though.
Apple control all the hardware their OS runs on, Microsoft doesn't, that is usually where a lot of issues come from, both with reliability, constant updates, sudden incompatibilities etc.
Some of the bloatware is down to that also.

I use and admin both. They're both pretty stable - you may want to look at what software is on the work laptop.

I have used Widows computers for over 20 years and windows 10 is most definetly the best version i get very little trouble with it
The occasional update will slow things down a bit but seems to be quickly resloved.

Having said that i have a had a couple of cheaper laptops running win 10 and found them slow and unreliable
Personally i think many problems people may encounter with win 10 may be down to cheap budget laptops

A good desktop computer or higher end laptop will have no problem running win 10

Packed full of pre-installed bloatware that is never updated and runs into problems with Windows updates.

I use OS X 99% of the time. I liked XP back in the day... W10 is ok but never really took to it.

I rebuild my father-in-law's cheap laptop recently as HD errors were rapidly increasing. Even when new it took a minute to boot up. Replaced with an SSD, fresh install, and boots up within 3 seconds from cold. It regularly used to lock, now it's stable. Quite an amazing difference.

Windows 10 is great, Windows 11 will also be great I'm sure.

What I don't understand is that there will be a huge outcry about changes to the Start Menu. It's like the last 0.00000001% of the work, why don't they just let the user choose from 10 options for how they ask for a program to open. Everything else is pretty much unobtrusive and uncontroversial.

I really like the fullscreen start menu that's there now, I like that I can build a list of programs, folders, files that I use a lot and leave the rest to rot in the full list until I need it. I'd like to be able to scroll down and have it show me recent documents, all apps that sort of thing, but it's no big deal.

I'd also like to be able to create start groups, so I can sit down to do a particular task, click one button and have it open a series of apps and files on a new Virtual Desktop. I'd like to be able to force apps to open with bespoke Virtual Desktop settings, so they always go on a particualr desktop, or can show on all desktops etc.

But really I'm not that bothered and just here for the Start Menu Wars.

As I opened this thread I wondered how long it would before somebody would mention they use a Mac... Post #2.

I had to use XP & 8 for work and now have to use Windows 10 for work, which consists of opening a few websites and a load of bespoke software.. it does that fine.

My home machines are Dell XPS Ubuntu and a LG Chromebase which has been converted to Elementary OS.

Windows 10 will be stable on a decent machine with the right drivers and bloatware removed. Stripped so much rubbish off the missus Win 10 machine when I got with her. Works so much better now.

It should be no surprise that people draw the comparison as it is the only real viable alternative. Groaning aside, Apple have got the whole package nailed down so tight that it is just a better platform to buy into, if the user isn’t a tech savvy computer geek, and even if so, the UX is just better thought out.

Do agree, I had a 2010 MBP for about a year that I got cheap, I switched in 8GB RAM and a SSD and it worked well, sold it for the same price I paid as it was no longer getting OS updates. I did miss the tinkering of the Linux terminal though so switched back once I sold the MBP.

Right now unless the user needs specific software, ChromeOS is probably the best platform for most users especially older, I've got my sister and mum on ChromeOS now just as they cant break much.

The Win10 machine is a brand new Dell laptop with OEM windows install, only non MS app is Adobe Reader. Yesterday rebooted several times because of the sleep settings being reset and not able to wake the bloody thing up so forced to reboot trashing my work.

How hard is it to preserve a few WINDOWS settings before an update? It isn't but MS just don't give a st about users.

New version of Windows is just same st, different name.
