I've just done a speedtest using the BT speedtester .. wow .. 148.9 Mb/s ..

thing is, I'm at work tethered to my aging Samsung on giffgaff 4g

A third party speedtest gave 16.7Mb/s which is much more believable.

How is the BT speedtest so far out .. ?

The reason for this test using my phone at work is that we have just had full fibre broadband installed at home and there's a speed promise guarantee .. but BT will presumably only take results from their own speedtester, which seems to be wildly inaccurate according to a quick google and my own test through my mobile phone..

Now I don't expect to have any speed issues, but should we ever feel the need to question the speed of the fibre in the future what do we do ?

the BT speedtest will use and test your connection at home (i.e. you'll have logged in to your BT account to access it)

the 3rd party will speedtest based on your current connection (i.e. your tethered 4g phone)

they aren't the same thing, you are comparing your home speed to your tethered speed - unless ive misread?

FYI my BT speedtest vs FAST.com vs Ookla was always nearly identical but always ran on the same network connection (obviously)

Actually you're right! .. I have misunderstood the testing .. I did some more reading based on your reply and it clarified what the actual difference is between the bt test and a third party test! many thanks, your answer was just the info I required to clear up the massive differences in numbers - I was in fact testing two different things haha, cheers! smile
