There was a stunning XKR convertible in Italian racing red with tornado wheel at Adrian Blyth in Greyshot. I was very tempted. As I remember it was a one owner absolutely mint.

Awesome. What a great colour combination.

Been following this below on AT and subsequently Matthewsons and interested to see where it ends up later today. For me, perfect colour outside, like that blue, and inside with ivory leather and sports seats.

It might give an idea of actual prices as the seem to be all over the place on AT esp trade vs private.

If the TVR was sold, I’d be tempted to put a bid in.

To answer my own question. Hammer at £30k. Single bid only. One bid on the books and none in the room, phone or internet.

Thus doesn’t really answer my question!

52k miles on the clock at it's MOT back in July. That's almost bang on CAP Clean predicated auction price for that car I believe. One bidder tells a story too.

That does sort of answer the question of "what is the approximate upper value of an X150 in the current market" ignoring the XKR-S models, almost no mile oddballs and so on. Convertibles command a chunky premium over a coupe, and XKRs a premium again, so you don't have to be a car sales guru to realise a lot of the advertised prices for early coupes with 70k on the clock are comedy gold.

Interesting insight. I did wonder if the red/ivory combination is undesirable (not to me)?

The market shows that black/grey/white with black leather were the popular new choices. Thus expect them to be the popular 2nd hand ones.

But, yes, looking at that, some asking prices seem optimistic at best. Good for me possibly!

I think it may be because people buying at an auction expect a bargain - at least for a relatively common car like an XKR - and if they can't get cheap they'll buy it from a less risky source where they can test drive it first or get a warranty.

I did wonder what a car like that was doing in an auction to start with.

As for colours, current tastes do seem to be getting more imaginative than monochrome, which is good.

Seller had it up as a private ad for a while with no bites I believe. Selling cars privately for thirty grand is a challenge, a lot of buyers will happily pay the extra for dealer backup especially on such a chunky purchase that is the epitome of a discretionary purchase - not many people buying a 10 to 15 year old supercharged 2 door Jaguar are going to take that perceived risk unless the saving is actually worthwhile.

Private buyers really do struggle to accept that they need to be prepared to sell their car for trade in / WBAC or similar + 10% ish. Some sit around unsold for so long they've probably wasted as much on the ads as they could ever hope to make over just punting it on the easy way.

OPs car is a great example, he paid a price that he can be absolutely chuffed with and the seller made a grand or two over trade in. A good deal for everyone, and unlike so many ads a car actually changed hands.

And that is the curious thing.

In the case above, the auction house has made a few K out of the deal, and everyone is seemingly happy. But why did the buyer not strike a deal when the car was advertised privately, thus cutting out the middleman and resulting in better value for both parties?

(Note that £30K was the hammer price, it doesn't include buyer's premium)

Maybe he had it up for £38k or something silly. ric p who posted it was tracking it on AT before it appeared at auction, maybe he can fill us in on what the seller was shooting for.

I suppose a large financial transaction with an auction house is less risky than giving some fella £30k in twenties, or a bank transfer, otherwise as you say there was better value for everyone if the seller and buyer came to a sensible price between them but you only have to browse the classifieds to see how likely that is with some private sellers and the auction functions to inform sellers that actually no, your car isn't worth that after all mate, sorry.

Great example I've cited before is the old XJR-S that I had. Private ads for these are comedy - £20k+ in many cases - and they sit for ever and ever without selling. In the meantime I bought mine for £8k in 2016 from a PHer, flogged it for £9k a year later to a bloke that really wanted a nice, he spent another £8k odd on makingit very nice and then after struggling to sell it privately it went through auctions a couple of times times and couldn't crack £12k when it last went through six months ago. He took it on the chin and moved on. Same chap sold a lot of interseting cars for far less than they owed him because he knows they're only worth what someone will pay, not what he spend and certainly not what he dreams they are worth. Meanwhile the same old cars just sat around at Car and Classic, probably without so much as a telephone call.

Ironically mine was lower mileage and far better mechanically and cosmetically than a lot of the fantasist cars too, but I wasn't a dreamer counting my imaginary £20k while the car sat around so I actually sold it when I wanted rid and moved on with my life.
