We've had our 2020 M340i Touring for a month now and a couple of times it has flashed up a red rectangle in the centre of the dash accompanied by a chiming sound (bell like). It lasts barely a second so I can't read anything in the rectangle and can't find anything about it in the manual. Both times it has been after start up, at exactly the same place heading out of our close (slightly downhill, right hand bend, about 15-20mph). It's running fine at all times.

Any ideas ?

Only you can see where it is on your instrument console, why not have a look in the manual to see what could be there & what it might look like, I would guess it won't take long.

Its part of a "collision avoidance system"

Basically the car thinks that if you continue at that speed and in that direction you are on course to hit something.

Have to say i am completely underwhelmed with it on my G30, It often activates for no good reason !

I did take a look before posting, nothing like it in there.

That sounds feasible, cold tyres, cornering, passing parked cars. Seems a bit intrusive tho' at 20 mph.

Mine often activates at low speed in a local village as i "weave" between parked cars.

Cannot recall it ever activating at above say 30mph

you can change the sensitivity of it from early to medium to late

Its based on the camera in the windscreen - basically if the OBJECT gets bigger quickly based on you driving within its parameters its give a visual Red car warning) and audible warning, Plus it prepares the brakes as well.

I knew about that after buying a set of wheels off a guy who also had one, thought I'd already set that to the lowest sensitivity.

Perhaps for a test, set it to the highest sensitivity and see whether the same situations cause it to get far more beepy and panicky? That'd help you to figure out that it's indeed this system getting twitchy and not some other fault somewhere else?

Yes. I think these systems are actually quite dangerous. Turn off what you can and set the rest to the lowest setting.

My car has the side collision warning system and the damn thing kept bonging at me every time I passed cars approaching a local side road with a give way junction on a slight bend.

Instead of reacting to the situation in front of you, drivers end up looking at the dash and wondering what the hell is going on.
