True, is anyone paying £1,300 for them though? I'm paying £23 a month for 3 years and they gave me the Buds Pro 3 in with that.
The way I see it my phone cost me £30 a month 25 years ago so thats my budget now and its a rounding error in what goes out every month. I'd rather stop drinking coffee than not have a really nice phone.
That's a pretty good deal. They've got you for 3 years so that's their sweatner. That's costing you £828, inc line rental, plus free heaphones. I pay £8 a month, plus a new £200 phone every 2 or 3 years. So not wildly different. The way I see it my phone cost me £30 a month 25 years ago so thats my budget now and its a rounding error in what goes out every month. The biggest difference is there is little chance I coudl make a phone last 3 years without damaging it! I'm fairly casual with mine.

Thought I'd stated a budget. As I'm replacing a phone that cost £145 7 years ago I've set a max budget of £300.
You say you do banking on the phone, how long do you plan to keep it for £300. You need to find a phone that has guaranteed security updates for that period. I personally would be looking at Pixel phones, but they will be out of your budget for the ones that are guaranteed to get updates. Off the top of my head you need to be looking at Pixel 7 onwards. The 6 is borderline out of updates now (Pixel 10 due this year).
Edit - Pixel 8a is £349 currently direct from Google.
Doubt it will fit the budget but I've been over the moon with my Sony Xperia 1 Mark VI - maybe not so much with the model name but the phone's been brilliant. Battery easily lasts two days, screen and camera are both great, fantastic speakers and Sony's take on Android is pretty vanilla, with just their creator apps on top.
It also has those really old fashioned yet really useful features like a 3.5mm jack so you can use a proper set of headphones, and space for a Micro SD card.
The Mark VII is out now, but doesn't seem to move the game on hugely.

I need a new smartphone to replace my 7 year old Honor 9 Lite.
Android
Used mainly for calls, texts, WhatsApp, Internet, banking.
No gaming
Watching with interest as my Samsung Galaxy S10 is coming to the end of life at a similar age, battery performance really down charge socket worn and cracked screen.Android

I don't need dual sim, but otherwise the requirements are similar.
- Not too bloody huge, I think 150g 6" screen is about right.
- Reasonable performance/future proofing but no gaming.
- Memory cards are much less a thing, and I have lot of photos but I guess I can have them cloud based.
- I would really like to have a 3.5mm headphone jack, but could compromise if I had to I guess.
At which point half of me is tempted to just buy a new S10 for £150-175 and be done with it!

Samsung A56 5G then IMO, as stated above: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-5G-Smartphone-Ant...That's if you MUST have 256GB (with cloud storage these days, is it needed)?
If you can stretch a bit more; the Pixel 9a on Amazon is £399 with the £50 voucher box ticked:

I got a Xiaomi 14T recently and it's brilliant for the money. It's currently £314 on Xiaomi's store after applying their 10% off voucher, but they change their offers frequently and it was recently £287 with a free 67 watt charger thrown in.
It's got a good bright 144hz screen, 12gb Ram and 256gb storage, fast 67w charging, dual SIM, good camera (with Leica lenses), 4 years Android updates. I honestly think it's better than my work iPhone 15 which is twice the price.
