Here at Royal Mail they use the postcode (predictably !) where the server is, plus what it is (DEV, SQL etc) and a number.

So you get memorable servernames like S491HQDEV10

Ours are all named after fictional spaceships. So we have Enterprise Intransigent, Moya, Starbug, Whitestar, RedDwarf, Babylon5.

Recently we got a couple of cars too, "Lotus" and "Boxster"...for no good reason at all...

We use boring site codes and functional abbreviations at my current job

At my last place the UK servers were named after characters from Arthurian legend. The Scandinavian servers were named after Norse gods...oddly enough Loki used to give us the most trouble

Most networks i do just end up with the main server being caled "server". Saves hassle and technophobes can understand it.

At work we have Thelma and Louise, the oracle servers.

I'm typing to you from "Titan", who when named was a titan. It's now just an old PIII 800 with 40mb of disk space left and no spare slots or ports anywhere for anything.

If they are in your house then fine call them what you want, if they are in a commercial organisation it helps to have some idea of location and use, although it could be argued that this could help hackers.

I have the joy of configuring a PC for the local church this weekend, bare in mind I think that religion is a load of old codswollop think of the fun I can have...

Err yes Vicar the computer is called, 'Satan' sorry it came like that from the factory and there is no way to change it, nor the email sigs

I tend to end up naming computers a bit randomly so I've had:
Munky_Tennis, Magic_Cat_Death_Ray, Spastic_Fantastic and Happy_Tortoise.
If I don't watch it tho, my housemates end up renaming machines for me so that they become stuff like
sh!t_computer
