Exactly what is different about the Desire to the Nexus One? The 'hard' buttons on the bottom are obviously one, but is the centre button a trackball like on the Nx1?

Any other improvements? I think the Nx1 rocks - and has better industrial design than the Desire (from the pics above).
The hardware is pretty much the same, but the desire runs the HTC SenseUI on top of it, which is closed source but very swish.

I'll likely end up with the desire as the N1 doesn't look like it'll be coming out on t-mobile and I don't have the hard cash to just buy the handset.
The Desire has slightly more RAM to run the SenseUI without impacting the performance of the OS. The centre button is an 'optical trackpad' rather than a ball.

The big difference for me though, and why I went Nexus over Desire was that the Desire doesn't have the second microphone for noise cancelling. My last phone was great as a camera & texting device but terrible as a phone, I wanted to make sure that first and foremost I could hold a conversation on my new one. The NX1 is leagues above my old phone for this (I have no idea how good the Desire is on this of course).

Also, Sense is all very well and nice, but a friend of mine is a little frustrated with it (on a Hero) as you have to wait for HTC to update Sense to go on top of new versions of Android, and there's no easy update over air. He's still on 1.5 and I'm on 2.1.
The other difference is that the Desire has an FM radio, apparently the Nexus One has one too, but it is not enabled for some reason. It would be good if it could be switched on somehow, seems a waste it being in there but not working.
Yep, I pretty much see that as a software/firmware issue. I presume they'll enable it one day, but for me it wasn't a big issue as I rarely used the radio on my old phone.

That is what it came down to in the end for me too - I realised how rarely I used the phone for the radio so decided not to worry. Trouble is, the times I did were times when there was something on which I really wanted to hear but listen again exists for most of it! For things like Le Mans when the radio is essential to know what is happening I use my dedicated radio to save battery anyway.

Looking to get this phone soon as my current contract with 3 mobile ends in 2 weeks, Only concern is that T-Mobile have a 1GB Fair Usage on Data - I would say that i am a power user would this be enough? Also what would happen if i was to go over every couple months?

Has anyone actually seen one of these in the flesh yet?

Are T-Mobile shops displaying them yet?

According to the T-Mobile forums they will be in shops from Monday. They've said I've been allocated one and I should expect it on Monday.

I had/have Sense on my Nexus One (I was big fan of it onthe Hero) and whilst it's nice I've swapped back to Cyanogen's 5.05 ROM. Android 2.1 has come a long way since since 1.5 and a lot of the stuff Sense brings I don't need or use...the only phone I'd swap the Nexus for at the momement would be an HD2 with Android

Apparently its 3Gb directly with T-Mobile or 1Gb if you go through a 3rd party seller

Don't worry about this, I am on the 1GB allowance on my Samsung phone atm, I use it as a modem and all that happens when you pass the 1gb (or 3gb in your case) limit is that they stop you downloading files and using p2p between 7am and 11pm. after 11pm and before 7am you get the normal internet.

They do say that in extreme circumstances they will cut you off for consistently going over the limit (although send you a warning letter first, don't confuse this with the text to tell you about you going over your limit though) however I can max out the 1gb limit in one day (streaming tv & radio) and I do this nightly so I would guess I use 30gb per month and have never had a problem with being cut off.

They do NOT charge for going over your allowance.

Are you a current customer? Seems a bit underhand offering the handset to new customers earlier than their loyal customers...

Yes I am, new customers could pre-order it as of Monday morning, I've been calling them for the last couple of days hoping to speak to that one customer service rep that will actually sort me one out, think I've got there.

Nope, you can still watch youtube videos, flash videos (which is what I use to stream the tv programmes over anyway) and pretty much any other web browser based activity. Just you can't use limewire for example to download things and you can't download a file to your hard-drive/phone to play later.

About the only thing you get is when browsing with the phone, every time you first load up the browser the second page you look at redirects you to a page telling you that your over your limit. When using the phone as a modem however you do not see this and when browsing on your phone, after this one page your free to continue to browse in that session for as long as you want with no other reminders.

The only thing I would say that you may wish to bear in mind however is the fact that Orange have brought T-Mobile, although it seems they are not bothered about merging the brands at the moment, when they do, they will likely take up Orange's charging methods. You do have a way out though if they do. When you recieve new Terms and Conditions with charges included, under law, you will have 14 days to cancel the contract with no fee.

This is interesting, I have a couple of questions though;

Any ideas when T-Mobile and Orange will start merging?

Say for example, you are an existing T-Mobile or Orange customer and decide to cancel your contract once the new T&C's come into effect but are only half way through your contract length... do you keep the phone?

Surely their legal teams are going to come up with some disclaimer for new customers joining now that will stop everyone jumping ship free of charge when they merge....????

Another question is over a differences between the two.

As a Blackberry lover, I've always loved the fact it flashes a red light to indicate messages and always disliked my Iphone doesn't do that.

I know the nexus does it through the trackball but is this an option on the Desire?

Not sure about the actual company merger but apparently Oranges masts will be merged with T Mobile's in October this year

Obviously I am not an expert in contract law but my understanding of it is that when they change the contract you originally signed, you have 14 days to so no, at which point the contract then ends.

The phone WOULD have to be returned to them as you get the phone on the condition that you have the contract for so many months/years so the phone would automaticly become theirs again. Return would be at their cost however.

When they merge you can not jump ship, only when they change the contracts wording or the T&C of that contract. Under law they can not stop you but they work on the idea that most people are too lazy or do not know that they can do this. Much like car insurance renewals not giving you the best price as they know most are too lazy to look again each year.

Considering moving over to a smartphone as well - does anyone know whether business critical applications such as VPN (to a sonicwall) work as well on Android as they apparently do on the iPhone?

3 & T-mobile through MBNL www.mbnl.co.uk are currently expanding their network, with the help of Ericsson to provide 97% coverage by population, the target date for the improved network to go live is 10/10/10.

Not keen on the styling. Very much prefer the look of my Hero over the Desire.
