Okay, I've just looked at the log file and other than the team & user these look like the only changes I made:

18:11:02: <!-- Folding Slots -->
18:11:02: <slot id='0' type='SMP'>
18:11:02: <client-type v='advanced'/>
18:11:02: <cpus v='-1'/>
18:11:02: <max-packet-size v='big'/>
18:11:02: </slot>

My PPD ranges anything from around 8000 upto 300000 and my CPU is currently running about 52C

Just checked the teams stats and we should be in the 1000 soon... thumbup

Thanks for that, Neilus. I will try those and see if that makes a difference. I seem to range between 10k-16k ppd.

Looks like Dave is pulling away from me, and I have the better of Doobit.

Been playing with running in VMs, as it is supposed to provide better ppd, but not conclusive for me

Happy folding

P.S. Just found out, one of my wife's relatives has Alzheimer's, so makes me all the more determined to improve my contribution.

I've knocked GPU folding on the head for a few days, after reading that it can slow down CPU folding...

I'll leave it off til the weekend and see what happens to my scores.

Thinking of getting a cheap GPU to chuck in my file server at home, as it's only a single core celeron and is no good for folding.

Anyone know which GPUs yield the most PPD (Without much outlay)?

There is a lot on forums about GPUs. GeForce cards are supposed to be the best, but things can get expensive.

See

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2011/04/...

I would tend to agree, that GPU folding slows the smp stuff, as it still needs the cpu.

As an example, right now, I am getting 7k smp & 5k GPU (ppd). Last night, I ran a linux smp only and it was 9k. Some of this is down to the different WU you get though, so I am going to do some testing (both with GPU off native W7, and just running smp under linux).

Some people seem to be able to get 20k+ per day from an i7 2600/2700 (roughly what is in my M4600 Inspiron laptop). Best I have had is about 16k.

Whatever you are doing Dave^, you are pulling away easily.

Happy folding

Yeah I saw that, but the more I read, the more confused I get... spin

From what I understand, the Shader Clock is the key to a good performer.

The Quadro 600 in the i7 work PC has a Shader Clock of 1280mhz, whereas this...

http://www.cclonline.com/product/86951/01G-P3-2615...

...has a SC of 1620mhz, and it's only £28.

I have a sinking feeling though that it will be ste....?

If it got a solid 5kppd I'd be happy...

Just updated my PS3, had a quick google to find out what had changed, and they're getting rid of the f@h!

Could do with getting the title of this thread changed...

Whooohooo, we are in the top 1000 as a team bounce

Unfortunately, I have been hit with two bad WU. I am down at 8k ppd and a 1.5 day ETA frown

Seems linux smp provides much better (~25%) results than windows smp (although GPU is running). I might disable GPU for a few days, to see if it improve the smp performance.

The Quadro in my M4600 generally seems to do 3-5k ppd, but you should be able to find some benchmarks on the card.

Bit miffed that Sony have ditched folding@home. Just hope my kids don't select the update, and wipe out the client frown. May be better to move this to the Computing forum.

Happy folding

kakaostats has been down all day, so I've not been able to check my GPU-less progress.

Tomorrow lunch I'll switch over to 6 threads and GPU, and see how that fairs over the weekend.

I usually do quite a bit better over the weekend, probably due to the PC being completely idle.

I do find it hard to believe there are only a handful of active PHers though.

Noooo, currently my ps3 is my only folding rig, my epic server can't fold right now as its sans power supply and every time I play on my ps3 when I'm done I load up F@H for a WU frown

I need a job in IT so I can build a farm out of old hardware!

Holy folding batman!!! That's a bit silly

Seen some posts by Grandpa, from that list, and he is home based, with several dedicated rigs.

I'm in IT, and my work server is a Dell Poweredge 6850 with 8 cores, and it manages about 2-3k per day. Technically, it is still in uses, but it is about 5-6 years old. It is also down at the moment frown so I need get it sorted.
About the only thing I can get hold of, is 6 year old desktops (pretty poor spec.) I might try running one up as a linux box, and see how it goes. At the least, it might help warm up the area under my desk wink

Damn,

Work is now filtering folding@home out. Can connect O.K, but the comm's gets cut off, so can't upload completed, or request new WU from the office.
I have some plans to try and get around this, but my ppd will drop dramatically for a while, as once WUs assigned at home finish, I can't send/get new ones until I get home cry

You could always try this...

http://code.google.com/p/coredownloader/

wink

If they are trying to stop you folding though, let them.... there are a few instances of people losing their jobs using company hardware to fold...

Thanks Dave^

I think it is just a tightening up in general, as the 'work around' to get BBC iPlayer (American company, so we appear to be US based) disappeared around the same time.

If it isn't easy to get back, then I'll have to rely on doing it from home.

Bump!

Anyone still doing this?

I notice on the PH leaderboard there are a few active, but not many.

It looks like they're trying to promote it by aiming for 1,000,000 "folders"

They're currently on just under 90k.

Nope. I must have gotten bored of it years ago. I'd actually forgotten all about it. I think I did it for a few weeks at the time and that was it.

Totally bizarrely I just had to look up this thread as just remembered I had set this up on the pre-prod db server at my old company and needed to check it wasn't still running. I left there over a year ago..... Luckily it seems I had stopped it whilst still there smile Might get it set up again on the home server and PS3.
