It's not significantly slower, and for a lot of things it will be quicker due to it's better GPU, but as far as I am aware it is slightly less "smooth".It's far from a door wedge though, it's mainly down to personal preference whether you want the ever so slightly more powerful Galaxy S or the ever so slightly more polished interface of the Desire.
On it's own the Galaxy S certainly feels fine, but sit it next to a Desire and all of a sudden the Galaxy S feels very slow and clunky. Both are running LauncherPro btw. Maybe I'll try rooting her phone and putting a stock version of 2.2 on it and see how it feels then.
Like I say, I'm not suggesting that the Galaxy S is a crap phone, it's just not as good as a Desire.

Ok, the words "feel", "clunky", "polished" come up again. sorry to be pain, but can you explain what that means? Any examples?
If you're saying that it's TouchFlo that makes the experience better, then surely it's the interface, not the device that makes the difference....? I'm running Beautiful Widgets instead of Launcher, so maybe it's not directly comparable?
So are you saying a Galaxy S running TouchFlo would be the best compromise?

If I run the same apps on both phones the Desire will always perform better. The Desire is faster, suffers less stutters in games etc. It was like this before I installed a custom ROM on it and is even more noticeable now. Like I said it could be the launcher that Samsung use that makes some of the difference, but even when both are running LauncherPro the Desire performs better. If you didn't know the specs of the two machines you'd say that the Desire was the higher spec'd one.
I'll say it again, compared to most other mobiles out there the Galaxy S is very good ... it's just not as good as the Desire from my experience.

Hmm, all these claiming the Galaxy S is as good as an iPhone 4. You're wrong, simple as. It could be as good, but it lags, the GPS doesn't work for satnav, and its full of bugs. I had a Nexus One after that, and that is also superior to the Galaxy S despite being older. I am a very heavy user of phones, and the Galaxy S simply wasn't up to snuff. I hated it. Actually, no, despised it. I could go into why its a bad phone, but I dont want to make myself angry again.
I also had a Desire, and as the poster above said, that is better too. I'm afraid apart from the screen, the Galaxy S is bottom of the pile of "top end" phones from 2010.

My daughter also has an SGS and she doesn't like it, so she's bought herself a Blackberry. It turns out that she didn't realise half the stuff the SGS can do and she never updated the software. Therefore, to her, the phone is crap. I've tweaked mine and think it's brilliant, but that's MY opinion

Oh believe me, I flashed different ROMs and tweaked till I was blue in the face. Got sick of it to be honest. The frustrating thing was, it showed much potential, but in the end, was a fundamentally flawed product.

As per my previous post, the problem is likely the filesystem. With Voodoo installed on a recent firmware (e.g. JPY) the phone is faster and smoother in every way that the Desire. Even just playing Angry Birds or Art Of Glow, you can feel that the framerate is better. Installing software and so on is also faster. In use it feels very similar in use to the iPhone 4, probably because they have very similar hardware. (I have these phones in very heavy use as I'm a software dev, currently porting some apps to each).I also had a Desire, and as the poster above said, that is better too. The GPS is also fixed in the recent firmwares.
I totally agree that it is annoying, I find this modern style of shipping partially broken software on devices really aggravating.

Stuck for another 15 months with my S1, although the positives outweigh the negatives for me, the f'ing gps issue does ruin an excellent sat nav though!

I think the bigger internal storage might swing it for me although I do have a 32Gb sd card.

I don't think you can really say which device will get better support at this early stage... The original sgs wasn't too badly supported, and as others say, HTC are moving towards locking their phones more and more these days.
