Finding the no led app v useful - displys time/date and battery status when the phone is locked. Also pops up different coloured dots depending on what sort of notification you have.

Turn data off. It uses so much battery.

Disagree strongly with this. I have either wifi or h+ data connection running all day long and have no issues with battery life. I can only think that there is some underlying setting or app which is causing such high drain. To those experiencing this, please check thoroughly what you have running and how often apps (like email and news widgets) are set to update.
Having done some testing with mine over the last couple of days, I think the battery drain is at least partially due to how the phone handles the 3G/2G transition and how it copes with low signal areas. Mines virtually new and a work phone with hardly anything installed, but I took off the two apps I had on there and then installed a battery meter widget so I could keep a close eye on the battery level, and another widget to show how many active apps I had running (none). From a full charge at 8am yesterday, it sat on my desk at work just doing push Exchange mail, i didnt ake any no calls or texts and wifi, Bluetooth and GPS was all OFF. When I got home at about 6pm it was still around 85% which isn't amazing considering the lack of use, but 10 hours for 15% drain, not too bad at all. I then left it upstairs thinking I'd solved the battery issue by removing the two apps I had on there (Facebook and Go Weather FWIW), so left it overnight to expect it to be at maybbe 60% this morning given the drain rate up to that point, especially as I only do push mail during office hours, all other times it's manual sync only so the phone should have been doing absolutely nothing all night. When I picked it up at 7am this morning though, 13 hours later, it was complaining of low battery at 17%, and had dropped another 3% by 7:30 when I left for work! The only thing I can put this down to is that the signal a home is rubbish and the phone drops between 1bar of 3G, 1 bar of 2g, and nothing at all depending on weather and the exact position in the house, whereas at work its strong 3G signal so doesn't switch to and fro, or have to hunt for a signal. Either that or the battery level algorithm completely lies during the first half of the battery life to make it look like its lasting longer than it actually is.

Low signal issues tend to be big battery drainers on most phones, but android phones seem particularly bad for this. This is why if someone lives in a low signal area, I suggest using an app like Juice Defender because it will turn off the data when the phone is asleep, and lets face it, for most people this isn't too much of compromise.

Yep, an apparent ~6% an hour whilst the phone is doing nothing at all is a real problem, the iPhone 4 in my other pocket is on the same network so will be subjected to exactly the same network conditions and it lasts a hell of a lot longer even though it's used a lot more and all services are left turned on.

I'd give Juice Defender a try then, it helped my mate loads with his (same problem as yours). I am lucky that the signal is strong where I live, but when I go around his house, my phone dies pretty quickly.

Probably being totally dumb, but I'm sure I read somewhere that there is a way to plan a route on your PC and then download it to an Android phone. Anyone got any pointers?

yes

I actually disabled them all because I only want to see them when I'm really checking my FB app (as none of them are really important/urgent), but I remember them working before (otherwise I wouldn't have to disable them).

Afternoon all,

Having a couple of issues with my s2 which I believe are well known but nothing can be done about them.

When I have 3g instead of H at the top of my phone, I cannot get access to internet at all, it just hangs. Any ideas?

Also, I am trying to set up my email through microsoft sync and it is not recognising my details even though i know they are correct.

I am hoping this is solved when ICS comes out or the phone is getting sold.

Anyone know their way round the complicated bits of an S2?

About 12 months ago something happened with our router at home, not sure what but for some reason things stopped being able to access the internet (they could connect to the network though). Mum phoned tech support and after a long while managed to fix it for her computer, but when I got back home all that she had written down was '1/50 LLC'. I managed to go into the settings on my laptop and sort it out so it would connect, but cant for the life of me remember exactly what I did. Probably something to do with access ports or security or something? Now I've got a smartphone and it wont connect either. It connects to the network just fine, but for some reason wont access the internet. I presume it has something to do with this 1/50 LLC that I adjusted last time? Playing around in the settings menus though, I dont seem to have the same options as with the laptop (took me long enough before, let alone on an operating system and device I dont know!)

Sorry if this makes no sense, and i'll do my best to answer any questions if it helps?

TIA

Try turning airline mode off and on again.

I had this issue which really wound me up, the only fix was to ditch Samsungs crappy gingerbread & TouchWiz interface and use an alternative firmware. Cyanogenmod and MIUI both fixed this (though the former broke other stuff hence the 2nd switch to MIUI.

Nice phone ruined my patchy software.

What's the best 4-icon "switcher" widget? I love having the ability to knock off wifi, GPS, Bluetooth from the home screen - couldn't to that on my iPhone! the standard power management widget with 8 icons is too big though.
Just drag down the top bar, you can turn them off in there smile
yes

Had a widget for these on my previous Android handset, but don't really need it on the SGS2, it's much easier in the notification bar. Esp the GPS: open google maps, oops, slide bar, tap GPS and you're good to go.
Use this all the time now

I would be very interested in also finding out how you do that.

Hello,
just got into this smartphone thing because the company gave me an S2.
I have read not sooo good things about this KIES programme from Samsung,
have used "MyPhone Explorer" with my K850i and now I see that the new version works with android.
Has anyone got experiences with MPE here ?
Another thing :
I was looking for a case that incorporates a small PAPER notebook,
did not find any and bodged together something from an old calendar,
is there something like that on the market ?
(have read the thread and followed links but did not find anything)

Why do you need the "myphone explorer"? If you plug it in, the phone can appear as a mass-storage device, you don't need any extra software.

I'm not really sure what "MyPhone Explorer" is?

I have used the Web based version of Kies - yes. Turn it on and then point your browser to the url displayed.
