New one on ebay today with 178,000 miles curiously priced at £8,888...

Its cause isn't helped by it being white.

The mileage wouldn't bother me at all, in fact I'd see it as a positive, but white is a bit of a kiss of death for me.

Is that the Brightwells' auction car that went through mid-last year and then popped up on eBay several times for a few pounds more? The fabric door cards ring a bell...

It is indeed the Brightwells car, well spotted. It sold for £4,500 on 23 June 2016. The door cards are correct, however. Only post-1988 cars have the diagonally-fluted leather door cards. Earlier cars have MB-Tex with a curious pattern of squares on it. The both the squab and backrest of the seats have an additional panel, too.

Thanks - I thought the cards indicated an original cloth or velour interior with leather seats swapped in - my SEC beard is in its very early stages, clearly!

Mileage is incorrect in the eBay advert then.

Brightwells;

It features a large history comprising no less than 30 stamps, all Mercedes main dealer from April 1988 at 1030 miles to October 2005 at 182,150 miles requiring two service books! The car is due to have a new MOT for the sale.

.gov MOT website shows 186,158 miles on 22.01.16.

560 with 179k when last MOT'd in 2010....

Late car tho in a good colour, I expect it will still make £2k + as it stands

Now relisted;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272557851555?ul_noapp=tr...

Originally listed as an auction with a £150 start price, now listed as £5000 classified ad ! I'll be amazed if its worth £5k as it stands. Vendor is the same.

Looks rather unloved though doesn't it? I'd agree that it'll be well worth 2 grand. I wouldn't pay anywhere near 5 for it, but someone might want the interior or other parts.

Seems a shame to strip it, but you'd need to buy it very cheap to make it worthwhile doing much work.

I bought mine in similar / worse condition with 80,000 miles and fully history and the Lorinser LO wheels for £500 4 years ago (but have since spent £1500-2000 on it with plenty more to go). I'm surprised how much even the very tatty ones are now worth.

Started making enquiries on this one:

Was subject to some paintwork by r restorations(?) in Towcester: anyone familiar with them?

That's a hard advert to read and I worry the vendor might be a pain but it certainly sounds worthy of further enquiry. I think I would want to see the car to form a view on its condition. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hmm, enigmatic indeed. Which is it, fully original or fully restored?

The interior is not original. It started out with blue amaretta (which it still has on the door cards). I thought it sounded OK on the whole.

Is that the one that was offered privately at £50K in early January, then was reduced to £39,995 and then the advert disappeared?

No, the 50/40k one had 13k miles and some kind of (Gulf) royal provenance IIRC.

This one is rather gorgeous, especially the Brazil interior.

Had the car looked over (thanks to PH'er Rds64), and I'm oot. Whilst the body has had some paint recently, the interior is a letdown, in need of a fair bit of tlc and with a few electrical niggles. If it hadn't received the new paint, I doubt it'd make £6K. As it stands now, it's not a £10K car.
