Have been toying for a few months with buying, among other possibilities, a C63 AMG Coupe (2011 to 2014 n/a version).

Suddenly, there seem to be loads for sale. 129 currently on AT. I'm sure there were only around 30 on there at any one time late last year. Is this sudden glut the result of some weirdness (lease expiries or something ?)

Really nice looking 12 plate cars with sensible miles now below £30k. But then I suppose they are 5 years old now.....

Volume for sale seems pretty static - @250 across all variants. I think the prices for a 2012 coupe < 50k miles are min £28k which seems pretty much the same as 3 months ago.

The glut is down to the sheer number of ex-lease spec cars on the system. Plenty of choice if you want a white or black coupe with 19" wheels. Dealers just can't shift them, which is something to bear in mind if you plan to sell yours later on. How much competition are you facing?

I have a full spec saloon (62 2012, 34k miles) PPP with LSD and am finding it tough going selling it post Xmas. I had an offer to take it at £34k late last year but held onto the car as my new one arrives in March. Now I'm at a £30k trade which is disappointing. Christmas was clearly expensive for many!

Another problem with the current used C63 market is the standard of buyer. It's a very fashionable car in certain circles and I'm telling no lies when I say 29 out of the 30 calls have been from people who are only interested in the bhp, 0-60 and lowest price you'll take. They know zip about what they are buying or aren't interested in the condition of the car beyond its colour and MOT date. What appeals to them is that their mate had one "bruv!", or "it's a 6.3 innit". ...... but it's not a 6.3 is it?! lol

Anyway, off the rant step.... Shop around, you have choice.

It's possible to pick up a car from a main dealer in your budget. I got into a 2013 car for <30k from a main dealer with the B service and a years warranty. Deals are available on pretty much anything that isn't an x220d smile

I recall about 3 years ago when they were nearly giving these away on lease deals. I bet that is one of the reasons in the jump of availability. Wouldn't surprise me to see the A45's go through the same.

3 years ago MB wasn't giving them away on a lease, it was a bit earlier. Just a lot of cars coming back from lease and PCP. MB also has a lot of SLK55 from 2014 which showed up suddenly on Used website.

Mentioned before, but the image is suffering by association of the aspiring owner. End-of-leasers are popping up too, but the older cars are now 9 years old, so always a tricky hinterland for a costly to run performance car.

W211 E63 is a different proposition, especially in estate form, I think they're wearing rather well.

The more for sale the merrier for me! I'll be looking in the summer when I can hopefully command a bit more for the SLK. My budget will be about £28k (which I intend to spend every penny of!) and I have seen plenty of good looking examples well within the budget for that.

I think the trick will be to buy based on condition and caliber of the owner over spec...which sounds weird BUT, so many of these cars have had the a&se kicked out of them in city centre's (see YouTube) that you'd probably want to look for one owned by someone who actually loved the thing, away from all the hype, and took who care of it.

^^^^ Yup. The current C63 owners network is an embarrassment. So glad I'm out now.

In all fairness though - cracking car for around the £30k mark.

Coming up to almost a year of ownership for me (that's a long time by my standards!)

Personally, i wouldn't fancy selling mine private, don't fancy a procession of bruvs knowing where i live and where to find the keys yikes

Seem to be two camps of owners for C63s.

Those who are true enthusiasts, the kind who will take the car out on a Sunday morning and enjoy the glorious engine and maintain the car regardless of cost.

And those looking for the loudest, flashiest thing they can find for the cash to use launch control around Bradford.

Totally honest, the 2 or 3 other owners i've met have been in the first camp. I think there is only a small number of people who rag these around town, but granted it does tarnish the image.

I just don't want people to be put off an awesome car because of this. Buy one in silver or dark blue with the silver multispokes to avoid the drug dealer image smile

I'm sure drug dealers would be in 488s/GT3s/whatever else if they were 30k too.

You clearly don't step outside PH do you? lol

Pistonheads is a sanctuary for the C63 enthusiast owner, but beware of Facebook and it C63 pages. Less literacy ability than a class of nursery school children and a trend to buy the cheapest thing available and ask why it's so expensive to run / what options its got later. I'm amazed daily by the stuff on there and it makes selling or contributing incredibly difficult for the more keen, passionate driver. As much as my new Alfa might not be so hardy long term, it has an image that should deter such members of our society for fear of gaining an eductayion.

Yes.

I suspect MB main dealer will be your best option OP.

Pay a bit more for a proper one.

My one fear for when it comes to looking for one for myself.. lemon dodging. I know the C63 is not too dissimilar to run cost-wise compared to my SLK, which I went in with eyes open. People who ask me about servicing, maintenance etc on it seem to think I am mad to run it as a daily drive. Nope, I just did research.

For what it is, the C63 is cheap as chips to run. Try running an E60 M5 or other big engined car with the same annual outgoings. The McMercs, both of, cost me very little outside the usual consumables and I had no need for warranty.

Not surprised to hear you didn't have problems. An E60 is a good example though.. I've known owners who have had absolute nightmares with theirs.

Yeah, agree with this. I bought a '57 plate w211 e63 estate for £16k 18 months ago. I've had 25,000 miles of smiles with it, and reckon it's still worth £16k, maybe more. No intention of selling though until I can afford the equivalent w213. On saying that, you can't get the 7 seat option in the new one...
