......it must have dab and a means of streaming from my phone (Spotify, podcasts).

Also needs to have the 7 seat option.

And only the V6 350cdi if diesel. Petrols seem thin on the ground but I'd have one.

Max budget would be around 15k and I can't seem to find one that meets the above criteria. Does such a thing exist?

Oh and it'd be my first merc, had a few BMW 5ers in the past but need the occasional seats in the back so they're out. Is this era of e class a decent and reliable car?

The streaming thing came in in the second half of 2010. Mine is a May IIRC and I just missed it.

DAB is reasonably common.

7 seats less so.

All three at the same time even less so, obvs.

Petrols are hard to come by and go fast. Diesels much more common.

For your budget you may be able to get a bluetec version which uses adblue and is EU6 compliant so should have a bit of a longer life avoiding emissions taxes or charges. I am not sure if you can get the 7 seats with bluetec though as the tank sits under the boot floor.

I was looking at them recently and was interested in the 7 seats but found them quite rare and then when I did find one I discovered the seats are too small for my teenage children. I was looking for one a bit newer then you but the ones I saw all had DAB and streaming from the phone either by Bluetooth or via an apple cable in the armrest.

It is correct that Ad Blue and seven seats were not available together.

The E-Class estate is the car that Mercedes seems to have forgotten all about. Since about 2010 you haven't been able to order it in any kind of useful specification.

Thanks chaps.

A bit of a dilemma then if the boot seats are only really suitable for midgets. They would be for occasional use admittedly but it is invaluable to have the option of splitting the little darlings up for those times they decide it's preferable to start civil unrest in the rear. I have 3 kids (3, 5 & 8) and we currently tool around in a 56 plate Ford Galaxy which has been excellent for the last 3 years, I just find it terminally dull.

It is excellent for lugging stuff about though, I've had a full garden swing set and play fort on the roof, filled it to the brim with garden waste more than a few times, loaded it up with 500kg of bricks and blocks in the past, used it to shift fridge freezers, furniture fence panels and a number of washing machines etc etc etc. As a result is shows some scarring from a busy life. Maybe I'd lose out with a shiny merc, I'd be reluctant to get it mucky.

The old 'gal is 10yrs old and on 93k miles now; I had all the belts done last year, a couple of brake calipers, big service and then a few months ago the clutch started to make noises (DMF likely on the way out), needs some new boots too so that's going to be a grand(ish) all in.

Hmm.....do I just keep the old bus until it literally disintegrates into dust and maybe get something fun to go along side it (mk3 MR2 maybe!) or get shut and go upmarket?

I could also get a newer S-Max or Galaxy but blowing 15k on a newer version of what I already have seems very wrong to me. A 56 plate galaxy interior is essentially identical to a 64 plate, albeit with less gadgets.

I often sit in the boot seats myself when my wife drives. I am 6'1". I find them perfectly fine for short runs. My children will sit in them for hours on end.

Why don't you just keep it and maintain it? It's not going to turn into dust and proper maintenance can be very satisfying; no matter how much you spend, it is never as much as the depreciation/lease cost on something new(er).

With the age your children are the seats should be fine. I said I did not find them suitable for teenagers and this is because they are not only tall but difficult to please!

I had adults/tall teenagers in my 211 boot seats for short hops.

Better suited to kids from 5-12-ish I'd suggest for any sort of distance.

Agree with posters above. My girlfriend ( 5ft 1) survives in the back perfectly well for longish distances, for shorter hops my 5ft 5 mother fits in ok too when we've got the whole family on board - (daughter to small yet to sit in back row hence why the adults have to)

They both took a little while to acclimatise in fairness as there's little sense of anticipation when braking or steering if ur facing backwards. Full bore starts in a e350 are unwise also as they've only got the seatbelt to brace against- we've had the odd howl of protest smile

Petrols very rare, I was lucky to find one.

I don't have the rear seats, so can't comment.
I do have the media interface, with a port and a bunch of cables in the glovebox.
I just stick a memory card in the slot and stream off that.

Early cars have the old 5 speed box (shifter on the transmission tunnel). The 7 speed (column shift) is significantly better I think.

What about the much unloved R Class it ticks all the boxes & your budget will land you a facelift model:

I have an E350 diesel, 2011 sport estate. Has the 7 seats, DAB and streaming all as standard so they are available. I deliberately sought one out to replace a GL, before that I briefly had an SMAX which was horrendous. Anyway, I have 3 kids 5, 8 and 10 and the boot seats work well but bear in mind you lose most of the boot. Overall though a very capable car.

Hold out for a petrol, seriously!

I had the E350cdi and it was OK, but when a petrol came up I made the change. It is so, so, so much nicer.
It is silky smooth around town and so much nicer when you want to press on. 305hp is not lightening quick but it can certainly move when needed.

But it is the refinement that impresses most, you sort of get used to that diesel drone but once it is gone you realise how much nicer it makes the whole experience.

But they are rare, trying to sort out an ML350 3.5 litre petrol at the moment, again, in a sea of diesels the good ones go quickly! It is getting very annoying.

Mine is a 61 plate on a MY12, so the newer 7g PLUS gearbox, that is important, make sure you get that whether petrol or diesel.
Mine is an AMG Sport in Tenorite Grey with black heated sports leather with the contrasting piping (alot come with the alcantara and the pleather splits on the bolsters a lot) comand, bluetooth audio, media interface, DAB, intelligent light system (superb option), 7 seats and all the other stuff that they come with as standard.

I had the avantgarde before, horrid, dangerous steering which tightens the more you turn the wheel, nasty system.
Also, the ride was actually more crashy than the sport, the dampers are not as good on UK roads compared with the sport.

Oh and MPG,I did 26,000 miles in the E350cdi in 12 months and it returned 33mpg, it said 38mpg on he OBC, but 33mpg calulated. Used to get around 580 miles from a tank.

I am have had he E350 petrol for 18 months and done 30k miles in it, not doing as many motorway miles these days and I am getting 30mpg from it. Computer shows 29mpg but calculated is actually 1mpg. I get around 510 miles from a tank.

It only needs 95 ron too, that is what it is mapped for, so with the price difference it works out about £2-3 a week more at the pump. To say I am well chuffed with that is an understatement.

On the school run of 6 miles the petrol is actually more economical!

I still get 35-36mpg on a run by the way. The E350cdi used to say 44mpg, reality was 38 or 39 at best.

Seriously, wait for a petrol.

Only early 4 cylinder cars had the 5 speed, all the larger engines had the first gen 7 speed from the W211 era.

I went to see this last week.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

Of a different era but that engine was silky. I was tempted but it's top money and there were a few things not quite right with it. Saying that I could still be tempted for the right deal.

So what we're saying is, you can either have BlueTec or 7 seats, but the MY12 onwards is necessary for the 7G+ right?

Which seems to leave a pretty small window where you can have the twin headlights and swooshy line over the rear wheel arch which dips down to the rear door trim (and was copied on the side profile of the 2011+ CLS), before the blobby headlighted model came in for 2013?

Is the blobby headlighted model worth the extra?

I change my mind every 30 seconds.

1. Keep the galaxy...shell out £700 on the clutch
2. Try and do a deal on the s211 I've linked too. But...it has 4 mismatched ling longs, all cracking with age , only one key and I've not properly checked the history.
3. Sit tight for the right s212 e350cdi to come along..... I've already been in touch with Mercland.com and asked for first refusal on one if they get one in..... they are a place I'd be happy to purchase with over the phone and drive 2.5hrs to pick it up.
4. Get an R class... The looks though, and they seem to be unecessarily heavy on fuel with the 4wd.
5. Get a GL400cdi and be done with it.... they are heavy on fuel too but have their own post code.

The galaxy is booked for its mot on Monday. If the 350 petrol is still there I might go see it again and have a closer look.
