Our 2008 ML320 has the later COMAND APS system fitted (at least I think that's what this one is) but as in the photo below, has developed some white horizontal lines across the display near the bottom. That photo was taken some months ago, there are a lot more lines now but all in the same sort of area. They are on the display all the time it's powered on and they don't change no matter what screen is being shown, they're even there with just the Mercedes logo on when the car is started up.

Anyone know if this means it's a busted screen and must be replaced? If not then what else could the problem be? Where would I get a replacement screen (other than a main dealer) and what sort of price are they?

I can't answer your questions, but it may be worthwhile speaking with these folk, who I've seen recommended elsewhere:

That can be repaired.
I have used a company to fix my Range Rover ice and they were excellent.
I will try to find their details and post them here.
I would have done it straight away but I am in Vietnam on holiday so it could take a little while.

The company is called Dtronixs ltd.

I was well impressed with their service.

Stick an Android one in, cheaper than repairing a vintage Merc Nav unit.

I have heard of that being done but never looked into it. Have you experience of doing this? Quick google just now brings some forum threads with fairly mixed views...

Yeah, I put one in mine, same OEM unit as yours and its great, not perfect but works better than a ten year old Merc one, plus,. I bought the cheapest 5.1 I could get, can get later ones which will be quicker.

Its the ability to pair your phone for Spotify on the move and Waze that is the best bit, can use any Android app you like.

Only Downside I have found is the radio is a bit crackly but apparently can be sorted, but I hardly use it anyway s have Spotify and internet radio to use instead.

Just to close out the thread, I discovered a company in Essex called Car Audio Technics who diagnosed the problem as a fault in the screen panel in the headunit. I sent the head unit off to them on Tuesday last week and it was back with me today, price was pretty reasonable too. I'd definitely recommend them, details on their website here - http://www.cat-essex.com/
