Ok, slippery slopes and all that, but - is there a valved exhaust available for these that would mean I could still leave for the airport at 5am without the neighbours wanting to kill me, but enables a bit more noise at other times?

I'm not aware of anything off the shelf.

A lot of people seem to delete secondary cats and fit an X pipe.

Not to C55's specifically - I just mean for V8 C's, CLK's, E's, SL's etc

As above. Secondary cat and or resonator delete is the way to go with these. It’s not really noisy at start up. Much better “proper” v8 noise at full chat. Downside is a little droney on cruise. Valved exhaust would be ideal but I’ve never seen one for a c55. I’m sure if you went bespoke you could do it but would be megabucks.

I've finally taken the car to a Merc specialist to get it serviced - I asked them to give the car a good looking over, and boy did they.

They've given me a long list of things that they recommend that i do, which comes to £3,600.

Before I get to that, the rocker covers and the RMS are weeping - I think that this is the breather issue pressurising the crankcase, can anyone give insight/guidance?

Is it financially viable at that service cost?

Sell and buy another/let another owner take on those costs and buy a C63 Hammer

I like the car, I'll keep it and fix it - might have to prioritise the list of stuff a little as I hadn't counted on that this month is all.

And, as I said, I reckon a couple of those (rocker cover, RMS) are symptoms of excessive crankcase pressure, so that needs sorting out - I'd suspect crankcase breathers are blocked.

From the sounds of it the car is a very long term keeper may as well bite and get it all done (one of my pet hates is rusty discs or pitted or only using a part of the disc)

Out of interest when C63 PP cars drop further in value would you change he C6”55 Amg for one or is he C55 the one period?

I quite enjoy the rarity of the C55 - only 50 or so UK cars were made. And by the time I've brought it up to the standard it deserves it will be uneconomic to sell it I suspect!

Correct me if I am wrong but the C55 uses the same engine as the R171 SLK55?

If this is the case the rocker cover gaskets are quite a common issue and just deteriorate over time, one of the very few common issues with the engine.. I replaced both mine when I owned the SLK. Also my water pump was changed as my specialist noticed a strange noise coming from it, removed it and took it apart and the impeller had started to come loose and was hitting the housing. Rare failure point as he had troubles sourcing the pump at the time as they are usually really robust.

Could the values of these surpass the C63? Or will the C32 supercharger need to go first?

Sounds a bit like 986/996 and you got one that had a few issues stored up. My C55 also had the gasket needing doing. Only one bank. It's a silicone sealant gasket rather than a solid gasket. It's easy to see when it needs doing by the oil weeps and sometimes the oily smell. Aside from that only really needed a service and a front or rear set of discs and pads.

Also echo the rarity of the C55. I much prefer the sedate looks. If they made a newer version that looked the same rather than the angular and aggressive C63 I would have bought it.

Yes- it’s pleasantly subtle. Also only going to get rarer, and this one has yet to crack 80,000 miles which is low for its age. I’ll likely add <5k miles per year.

Would be nice if there was less to do now, of course- there’s also some surface rust in the wheel arches, but once everything is done at least I’ll know it’s 100% sorted and then just servicing neededd

It's always possible, but I kept my last car for ten years.

I've got the C55 estate and a 996 cab, a fairly decent pairing in my view.

Right! Does anyone know about the breather system for these cars?
