Kudos to you, that slatted one looks cr@p...the grille is more Merc SL tradition I believe and fark all to do with AMG.

Now this is good to know, any remaining guilt I had about fitting it has been lifted!

It does take a special kind of person to fit an AMG badge to a non-AMG car.

You should go up to these people and just ask 'so who was your engine built by?'

What's so wrong with people mis-badging or otherwise modifying a car to make it appear a better model than it actually is?
It's tragic, that's whats wrong with it.

It’s tragic giving a st either way.

I can’t see why anyone would care what anyone else does to their car, frankly.

Because there's many of us who buy the real deal, that's why we care, stanley.

Well...if the logic is to not give a st either way, then why comment on the thread?

Do you always answer questions with a question?

Is there a law somewhere which says that I can't?

Would you stop if there was?

To avoid derailing a thread, my thoughts since you asked, I don't get why people do it, I'd not do it, but it doesn't bother me per say.

I find it particularly interesting when you see an old 3 series diesel with the M3 wing mirrors, but then if it makes them happy.... It certainly shouldn't change the enjoyment of someone who has an M3 attached to the same wing mirrors

WTF?

I seem to note that those who are making a noise about this thread are bimmer fans?

Why am I a binmer fan? And what would it matter anyway?

I used it as an example. I could have used an Audi example to, though they are less common on the road (from my experience). Would you be less dismissive if I'd used a Merc example?

Back on track.

All, to summarise the original topic, before the derailment attempts started, why do people rebadge their standard Mercs as AMGs? Let’s keep the thread on track...perhaps start a fake AMG photo thread like the bad parking thread?

You would need to ask them all but I expect the common answers would be variations on ”because I want to”

They could equally all legitimately ask ”why do you care?”

And in most instances the answer would probably be "I don't care in the least, but it looks st". It's fraud, fakery, deceit and ego rolled into one big ball of trying to increase self esteem by hopefully fooling others into thinking your car is something it isn't. And sadly gaining satisfaction from that.

I think you are right. You can't see the badges from the drivers seat so they probably do it because they want strangers to think more highly of them.

This is possibly also the reason real AMG owners get bent out of shape by it: strangers may not think as highly of them as they feel they deserve (because the brand is devalued)

I got less “hassle” from thrusting tdi-types when I removed the nomenclature from my C36.

It probably passed for a bodykitted C180.

It would make less difference if the badges from the C63 were removed as it’s harder to disguise.

The fakers don’t bother me too much these days. Mercedes (and BMW Audi) are partly to blame by cashing in on the halo models to boost the bread-and-butter models.

Back in the day, I needed to supply the chassis number of the M535i to buy a replacement badge from BMW, such was the importance placed on the brand at the time.
that's what I thought

There is already a misbadging thread which contains many "AMG"s:

I remember those days. My mate had a 316 in 1990 and wanted an M3 badge for it. The BMW dealers wouldn’t sell him one without a V5.

It's an MB, not a BMW. Owners tend to be a bit older, and slightly less bothered by the opinion of others.

Is there a cheapo deal on eBay for AMG badges? Came back from France today via the tunnel in my C63 and, when on the M20, I spotted 4 fake AMGs. One of them was a C series coupe with a 4 exhaust mod but the flat bonnet gave the game away. Another was a "CLS AMG" which had the cheapo LED driving lights stripe (and was driving like an @rse), the 3rd was a "C22 AMG CDi Elegance"...the 4th was an E class taxi.

Why? I note someone has posted on this forum about a tune/remap and has included pics of yet another fake AMG...wtf? I always wanted a Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth back in the day, but I never felt the need to re-badge my Sierra Sapphire 2.0i Ghia as an RS Cosworth.
I'm the opposite, took the badges off previous RS cars. Would do it too for current M but they have made it hard as the side badge isn't easily removed!
