Is it 'diluting the brand'?
If that's addressed at me then yes, I think it is. Perhaps not as much as people might think though - it pre-supposes people know what an AMG is in the first instance. The irony is to those that know - essentially the target audience - you just look an idiot.

That is really sad.

I’ve got a 19 reg c200 as a loaner at the moment. Aside from the fact that it’s a very nice car in every way.... it has AMG floor mats!? How very strange.

My E350 AMG Sport came without any AMG badging anywhere except on the floor mats.
It now has none whatsoever.

Edit: just realised it has AMG branding on the wheels.

Having read this I don't know whether I'm naughty or not now.

I have a CL500 with an AMG factory fit body kit /21' wheels. It's how they all came from the factory at the end of life run out.

On the back it had CL500 and the AMG badge. It looked cluttered so I removed the CL500 lettering. Leaving the AMG badge

On the Side I added the V8 Biturbo badges (It is a V8 Biturbo engine) because I felt this broke up the long sides a bit and quite frankly looks better.

I could have bought and can afford a full fat AMG CL63 but actually wanted the bog standard CL500 mainly for ride comfort and the 4.7 V8 Biturbo is plenty fast enough for me.

Should I beat myself with a stick daily or not ?

No? It's your car, do as you please... If you put M Power badges on, then you may have a problem wink

and people badging up takes away the enjoyment your real deal gives you?
Which makes 'AMG badging' such fun as it really annoys the AMG snobs. The way they huff & puff is SO funny.

Back in the day, I needed to supply the chassis number of the M535i to buy a replacement badge from BMW, such was the importance placed on the brand at the time.
I remember those days. My mate had a 316 in 1990 and wanted an M3 badge for it. The BMW dealers wouldn’t sell him one without a V5.
There might have been more importance placed on the brand but the value of the M brand now and the scale of the companies’ manufacture and revenues will be unrecognisable now, 30 years on

I don’t like what they’ve done but it makes complete sense from a business POV and the premiums they charge for a few badges and harder springs is insane.

Fully agree; it makes perfect business sense.

When the W204 C-class was launched by MB in 2008, one could specify the Sport package over the Elegance spec which gave harder suspension, AMG branded wheels (although not wheels used on an AMG car), AMG carpet mats and the relocation of the bonnet-star to one in the centre of the grille.

The UK market was seemingly the only European market to favour the Sport version over the more traditional car, which shines a light on the needs and wants of the UK car-buyer.

That the Elegance W204 with its pothole-compliant springs and sidewalls was more suited to UK roads has little to do with it I suspect.

You can’t blame people for wanting to appear to be more successful / sexy / individual than they really are, but the reality is that the fake halo badge, much like the oompa-loompa orange tan, ultimately just looks rather needy.

But say you can only afford one car, do too many miles for work to justify the decent model, I can see the appeal of one that looks more edgy and less naff than a 2.0se

You’d actually be lucky to get 2 litres in a boggo car now. 4 USB ports and looks like an rs4 makes it more bearable I gesss

Like the ‘fake halo’ label will be using that going forward

An AMG isn't an AMG unless it has the correct engine. The rest is running gear & cosmetics.
What about 43 s and 53 s then???
I thin these days it s a lot about suspension and gear box tuning too

AMG, M Sport, S-Line - trim levels, just like Ghia was to Ford.

I let an AMG badged A220d pull out in-front of my A250 today.

I wrongfully assumed when clocking the AMG wheels, body kit and rear spoiler when he was waiting in the side road ahead of me, that he'd be off like a rocket and wouldn't hold me up so let him cut in front.

Thing is, why go to all that bother and leave the A220d badge on? Can understand why he didn't replace the diffuser and exhaust system but still.

How about an "Engineered by AMG" an A series where AMG took the A250 sport and tuned it? Different suspension & exhaust and uprated gearbox programming?

This has been done since the beginning of time in the UK with W126 280SE's being badged as 560SEL's or W124 Mercedes Benz 200 with an SEC bonnet and grill. For the most part, they're only fooling themselves and maybe irritating the occasional hyper sensitive car owner who thinks that they're part of an exclusive club smile

It doesn't really matter does it?

Didn't SEAT or somebody have a model with sticker writ large on the bodywork 'CHASSIS BY PORSCHE' or something similar?

Mk1 Ibiza used to say "System Porsche" in contrast down the side, and on the cam cover if i recall.

Something to do with Porsche designing the cylinder head and various bits and bobs.
